The butte county sheriff's mounted posse was founded in december 1941 after the start of world war ii to fill the void left by deputies enlisted in the military. the posse was the first butte county volunteer organization. the objective of this organization shall be to uphold and defend the constitution of the united states of america, the state of california, the county of butte and the cities therin. to maintain law and order, to foster and perpetuate a spirit of good fellowship and fraternalism among its members, to promote a feeling of mutual goodwill between the county of butte and their surrounding communities and the rekindling of that pioneer law-abiding spirit of our forefathers and their love of fine horse flesh.
