The purpose of the mrdc is to increase vitality and economic stability by promoting excellence in urban design and planning in the memphis area. To achieve this mission, the mrdc serves as a resource to the entire community, both the public and private sectors. A civic design center is a place where people come together to learn, discuss and solve community problems that affect their lives by employing the principles of good designto both the built and natural environment. When attention is given to urban design and planning, civic behavior and pride improve in caring for both private and public spaces; vandalism decreases; neighborhoods and public places become safer; the community's natural resources and unique history are preserved; property values, economic development and community investment increase; and people are drawn to and remain in these dynamic,revitalized cities. The quality of life of the citizens is enhanced.
