New Haven - Urban Resources Initiative Inc

Overview

Mission

To provide students with clinical learning experiences while conducting urban ecosystem research, promoting environmental education, providing technical guidance for community groups undertaking restoration activities, and advancing the practice of urban forestry.

What it reported doing in 2025

Volunteers have been working with urban resources initiative to improve new haven's urban parks and other public lands by planting trees and removing invasive vegitation. In 2025, uri held 84 volunteer events to remove invasive vines, which pose a significant threat to urban forests. Vines can harm trees by covering foliage preventing photsynthesis: outcompeting trees for sunlight; pulling down branches; and encirling trunks causing mortality. Given the proliferation of invasive vines, and tree decline, uri has worked to increase public awareness and increase work with volunteers to tackle this problem together.

Operating model

Revenue model
Mixed. Its operating money came from several sources; no one source provided a clear majority.
Distribution model
Direct operator. The filing allocates 100% of reported program-service expenses outside its grant, affiliate-payment, and member-benefit lines. This expense classification does not rule out separately announced grant awards.
