The purposes of the organization are to provide its members and other veterans needed services, such as application for va benefits and other services. the organization also provides social and recreational acti- vities for its members as well as promoting and encouraging participation in patriotic activities for the whole community. in addition, the organi- zation establishes a scholarship program that is to encourage its members and the progeny of its members to pursue the higher education. to achieve these objectives, the organization schedules seminars and briefings on veterans related issues and sponsors group events, such as annual picnic, dinner functions on thanksgiving, christmas and new years including chinese new year; parades on memorial day and veteran's day and the 9/11 remembrance. visits the hospitalized members in the hospital. burial honor includes paying the last respect to the deceased member and condoles with the deceased family member(s) at the funeral. in addition, the organization participates in any american legion functions that include county, district, department of new york and national conventions. the organization contributes to the national commander's project such as national emergency fund to help legion members who is in need of financial assistance during disaster, the legion's legacy scholarship fund, which funds the education of children who have lost a parent in our nation's service and to the comfort warriors fund, which provides comfort items not issued by the military or government to the wounded soldiers in the military hospitals. the organization also has an annual scholarship program. six (6) awards for high school graduates who will be going on to college and six (6) for college students based on their scholastic achievements and community service credential. the orgazniation also participates in community activities(services) such as 'clean up chinatown-; double ten(chinese independence day). the organization provides color guard details to present the colors in the opening ceremonies for many civic and community functions, some of which are: sba veterans job fair and businesses success,autumn-moon cultural festival, lunar new year celebration opening ceremony,the u.S.Department of homeland security naturalization cermony. the organization supports cpldc (chinatown partnership local development corporation)functions. the organization provided the second floor auditorium to chinatown working group (cwg) for their monthly meeting which ends in june 2014, also to chinatown youth initiative (cyi) for their press conference and to nypd 5th precinct for yoga exercise to relief stress for domestic abused victims. the organizatioln's facitlity is open from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm weekdays and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on wekend. the members can read the daily newspapers or books in the library. they can watch television, or play domino or play tile cards, or relax and enjoy each others company. the organization also provides refreshment and coffee or tea daily to its members. approximately 500 members and their friends utilize the facility on a weekly basis.
