Form 990 - organization's mission the mission of the rough riders is to commemorate the life and history of one of america's greatest presidents, theodore roosevelt. roosevelt (october 27, 1858 - january 6, 1919) was an american statesman, author, naturalist, soldier, explorer, and historian who served as the 26th president of the united states. after the war with spain began in 1898, roosevelt helped form the infamous rough riders, a combination of wealthy easterners and western cowboys. he gained national fame for his courage during the war in cuba. our focus is on roosevelt and his exploits with the rough riders, both in tampa during the encampment and on the hillside of cuba during the 1898 spanish-american war. the roug riders wear a uniform based on historical significane, depictions and photographs of the original soldiers, with a hat, blue shirt, khaki trousers and a signature polka-dot scarf, orignially worn by roosevelt and purchased at a local clothier in tampa, fl. our present mission is to promote the memory of theodore roosevelt and the rough riders through public participation in community events, by charitable and philanthropic endeavors, and through educational programs. out mission includes discovering and preserving historical sites and when it comes to community service, it is often said that when a community need arises, you can count on teddy roosevelt's rough riders to come to the rescue.
