Everybody Wins Los Angeles

The mission of everybody wins! Los angeles (ewla) is to increase children's prospects for success in school and in life through one-on-one reading experiences with caring mentors. Through our mission, ewla aims to give every los angeles county elementary school student the individual attention they need to gain confidence and to learn on a level playing field. Our goal is to build a culture of reading and book-sharing, where parents and business professionals care for their community's future together. Through our power lunch program, ewla matches adult volunteers from corporations and other organizations who read one-on-one with "at risk" students at a local elementary school. Once a week, each reading pair shares conversation and a good book while the student eats lunch. The goal of power lunch is to reach title i school students while they are young, to stimulate their interest in reading, and to encourage them to believe that they too can succeed in school, and ultimately in life. Studies show that simply reading to a child for an hour a week drastically increases his or her confidence and love of reading. Through our readers are leaders program, ewla matches older students with "at risk" students in their same neighborhood to share a book each week during lunch. Both the older and younger student win by receiving the attention they need to develop literacy skills, build confidence, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading. Through our book buddies and book drive programs, we share books with our students, their families and our partner schools. Every year, thousands of books are donated to ewla that we share to expand the reading opportunities and love of reading for the kids (and their families and schools) who participate in our programs. When you read with a child, everybody wins!-the volunteers, their companies, the schools, the students, and ultimately, society.
