Hitchcock center for the environment, inc.'s (the "center") mission is to foster a greater awareness and understanding of our environment and to develop environmentally literate citizens. serving over 7,000 children, youth and adults each year, the center's programs use the best practices of environmental education. programs are designed to use the study of science and nature, its models, systems, processes, and elements, to serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring and engaging every generation in the community to pursue a more ecologically sustainable future. schools and communities served: 60 schools, colleges, universities and organizations are supported with real-world, environment-based, experiential learning programs. 40 rural and urban villages, towns and cities are assisted with multi-faceted school and community programs. the center's programs have more than doubled in the last ten years alone. today, the center faces a pressing need to expand its educational classrooms, offices and resource areas to keep pace with the rising demand for its award-winning programs and to stay at the forefront of its field. to address this need, the center is taking an ambitious step forward by planning, designing and building a new visionary environmental learning center that will more than double the size of the center's current facility. significant planning for this new facility occurred in 2013 with the selection of a design team and the completion of the concept design phase. completion of this capital project, one that will meet the highest standard of sustainable development in the built environment, is planned for 2017.
