Explanation:praps mission is to end stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness by supporting an allnclusive and healthier community through art.Prap supports mental wellness through art displays of the artists work at the gallery mobile art displays and cultural responsive events where artists connect with communities. this model also provides economic revitalization for the downtown area of modesto and job training volunteer opportunities and youth development for people with mental health challenges. this highly recognized community service arts organization serves as a model example of transforming the stigma of mental illness into the building of healthy relationships through a healthier inclusive community.In 2009 the organization began as community events. an art gallery was then established as a 501c3 within the downtown area.Next the gallery expanded its reach as a mobile art gallery. in 2014 the gallery encompassed two-thirds of a block on the corner of 13th and j.Prap is a comprehensive community intervention strategy.A team of part-time staff and volunteers provide a continuous campaign to end stigma revitalize downtown areas while implementing new strategies for a all-inclusive and therefore healthier community for those living with mental illness and being inclusive through community activities and promoting the individuals recovery through creative wellbeing activities such as ceramics mosaics painting & drawing photography textiles and mixed media which helps the person to notice improve and maintain mental wellbeing develop coping strategies and self-management skills and feel greater empowerment in their lives. most importantly people with lived experience serve as community stewards of what can be accomplished as a person not a label. individuals living with mental illness are promoting a healthy community by: 1 increasing their social engagement rather than isolate 2 continuing personal recovery through public activities 3 working in teams to promote art as wellness and recovery and 4 increasing the number of empowered volunteers within gallery at community events or downtown areas. 1.Serve as a gateway to services and providers develop linkages for referrals and encourage use of community-based services.We will continue to empower those living with mental illness to manage their recovery on their terms. 2.Provide the meeting space at the gallery for community use such as peer support meetings or as a general gathering area for consumers family members and other community members.3.Serve a clearinghouse that offers volunteer artist and educator services to its partners for collaboration on city and county-wide projects.Positive activities benefit not only participants and their family members but also provide a service for the greater good of the whole community.Using art and music as an empowerment tool prap's consignment gallery open air festivals and anti-stigma campaigns model inclusive behavior break down existing barriers and result in increased opportunities for volunteers to assist with city and county wide events creating a positive cycle of community participation and support. prap will continue to be a vital link in the process of reintegrating those living with mental illness into mainstream society. by simply sharing their common love for the arts people with mental illness will find their rightful places in social networks. they are no longer people set aside in day treatment centers but rather spirited community members capable of maintaining high personal and professional integrity as artists educators even coordinators and valued citizens of stanislaus county. all of these strategies have proven to decrease the stigma associated with the mental health system and simultaneously encourage people receiving services to connect with community-based supports that focus on their interests passions and strengths instead of their symptoms illnesses and diagnoses.
