is a scientific culture of bright imaginative and motivated people with diverse life experiences perspectives and ethnic racial cultural and educational backgrounds. coastal marine biolabs practices and policies exemplify this belief and our contention that an atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity will promote the highest levels of learning achievement and scientific advancements for the betterment of humanity. coastal marine biolabs integrative biosciences program inc. cmb is a nonprofit corporation organized and operated exclusively for educational purposes. pursuant to our tax-exempt purpose cmb develops model programs and educational resources aimed at improving high school teaching and learning which is beneficial to the local community and society at large. in furtherance of this overarching goal our organization conducts the following four primary activities: 1. residential research experiences for high school students hosted at the cmb lab residential research institutes provide high school students with a rare glimpse into the daily practice of science and a unique opportunity to experience how research is conducted in real-world scientific settings. these fast-paced and intensely focused 10-day experiences unfold under the supervision of ph.D.- level scientists within an academically challenging but nurturing environment that highlights the collaborative nature of science inquiry and the connections that exist among scientific disciplines. each institute is designed to emulate a graduate-level learning environment where students participate in engaging and interactive discussions with cmb faculty and visiting researchers learn advanced life science concepts and methods that erode disciplinary boundaries contribute real data to ongoing scientific projects and communicate their research and its significance in a public forum. our primary goal is to help students envision their future roles and responsibilities as members of a global scientific social network that is dedicated to improving human and planetary health. approximately 15 percent of our organizations time and budget is allocated to this activity. 2. student internships for high school students internships hosted at our facility enable a select number of high school students to work alongside scientists on locally relevant projects in a wide array of research areas. student interns working under the supervision of cmb scientists or their partners have contributed to studies of environmental water quality in our coastal watershed provided resources to examine the relationship between otolith shape and various ecological biogeographic factors in rockfishes conducted ultrastructural analyses of a local hydrocoral species and participated in a statewide marine biotoxin monitoring program hosted by the california department of public health. internships are offered on an invitation-only basis to students enrolled at partner high schools in the ventura unified school district and the los angeles unified school district. approximately 5 percent of our organizations time and budget is allocated to this activity. 3. curriculum development for high school coursework for this activity cmb faculty work alongside educators in our facility on the development of curriculum resources that teachers can bring into the science classroom and lab to stimulate student interest in science careers and achieve a number of positive student outcomes relevant to success in 21st century science career settings. our approach to curriculum development responds to state and national learning goals and is aimed at helping students experience science the way it is practiced in real-world research settings. approximately 40 percent of our organizations time and budget is allocated to this activity. 4. professional development pd experiences for high school science teachers held in our biosciences facility these immersive experiences are aimed at providing high school science teachers with the subject matter knowledge technical training classroom resources and instructional strategies required to successfully implement science curricula developed by our faculty and their partners. these five to ten-day experiences are hosted in our biosciences laboratory during summer recess. one-day supplemental pd sessions are scheduled throughout the school year during times that our convenient for science teachers. additional remarks all of our organizations primary educational activities are conducted by our faculty who operate through an extensive collaborative network consisting of research scientists education researchers in-service science teachers school districts teacher educators national recognized evaluators data scientists and science media and communication experts. all of cmbs primary educational activities are conducted at our biosciences facility and conference center which is located at 1559 spinnaker drive suite 205c ventura ca 93001-5302. our faculty present resources and the outcomes of our programming during annual conferences hosted at various venues throughout the country e.G. workshops roundtable discussions breakout sessions etc.. our educational programming has been supported in large part through in-kind donations from corporate sponsors and grant awards from corporate foundations and federal agencies including amgen foundation the national science foundation and the national institutes of health. all of our organizational expenses are allocated to educational programming.
