The national museum of the american coverlet was incorporated in the commonwealth of pennsylvania on february 21, 2006 for the purpose of collection, display, preservation and stewardship of, and education regarding, primarily antique woven coverlets, their history and their makers, as further defined and outlined by the following: a)to collect and display fine and interesting examples of coverlets of all weave structures. b)to illustrate how coverlets were made and by whom. c)to illustrate coverlets in history; i.E., bring history to life by demonstrating the general historical context and the events of their day. d)to illustrate the history in coverlets; i.E., demonstrating the background behind political slogans, historically event-related pattern motifs and changing taste in decorative arts as they appear in coverlets. e)to respect and convey the humanity of the weavers and their lifestyles and challenges, both personal and professional.
