In 2010, member- led, staff-supported local initiatives included: (1) continued creation and enforcement of sweatfree procurement ordinances; (2) coalition support for hotel workers engaged in negotiation with multinational corporations; (3) education and outreach about food deserts their existence, impact on community health, drag on economic growth, and potential solutions; (4) creation and implementation of a climate action plan for oakland to include green collar job apprenticeship programs; (5) community assessment of needs among employees of ethnic grocery stores (mercado workers); and (6) established salons and shabbat gatherings where our members can grapple with some of the most controversial issues of the day and explore solutions inspired by jewish cultural and religious history. These initiatives have helped shape local community debate, public policy and business practices.\n\nInterfaith engagement: pja embraces the essential worth of every human being (btselem elohim) and recognizes that faith can be a powerful source of moral resonance and motivation that supports a diversity of views in the civic arena. In 2010, one hundred plus young adults participated in our fellowship with equal numbers in los angeles, san francisco, and washington, dc.
