religion and spirituality with the visual, performing, literary and media arts. In 2012, courses included: master class in art i+ii, jesus and the movies, african american hymnody, pop goes religion, poetry and the theological imagination, museum methods and practice, and dimensions of sacred dance.\n\nIn an attempt to engage the wider community, care offers and co-sponsors a calendar of public programs in a variety of formats: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, concerts, film screenings, and conferences. Programs in 2012 included: new way media festival, idea lounge series, and trivia night at the museum, care issues semi-annual grants to artists and non-profit organizations to support projects that align with /care's mission. Grants support research, youth ministry, exhibitions, publications, and other programming. Grants recipients in 2012 included: new spirit community church for art installation of embodied images of the word of god, wixarika research center for a project that digitizes their archives of huichol art, culture and religion, dharma realm buddhist university and the graduate theological union for courses regarding art in buddhist traditions, uc press foundation for a book on religion in picasso's work, ruchard bruxvoort for the psalm 23 immersion project, a catalog of songs representing psalm 23, and related curriculum and web resources that also engage jewish/christian dialogue and topical issues such as ecology, poverty and globalization.\n\nCare opened the doug adams gallery in 2009, and serves as a curatorial and management umbrella for the space. The mission of the doug adams gallery is to present modern and contemporary art through thematic exhibitions that provide a new lens for reflecting on spirituality, belief, ritual and the sacred. Exhibitions support and enhance the curriculum of the gtu, and provide a forum for interdisciplinary and interfaith dialogue. The gallery serves as a laboratory, allowing students, faculty and the community to think critically about current issues and test their conceptions of the world. Exhibitions in 2012 included: the migrant project: contemporary california farm workers, dimensions of dark: cathy richardson, and sunday spirit: religious images by african american artists from the jean and robert e. Steele collection. The care art collection represents 24 works, with themes ranging from biblical scenes to symbolic iconography to abstract imagery. A broad variety of media is represented in the collection, including oil and acrylic on canvas, etchings, engravings, photographs, and sculpture. The works represent a variety of faith traditions and reflect the ecumenical and spiritual character of the gtu. Important artists include rembrandt, chagall and rouault. Together these works capture the intimacy of creation, presenting a visual theology to the public. The bulk of the care collection was assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s under the leadership of doug adams. Adams was professor of christianity at the pacific school of religion and founded care in 1987. Works were either purchased directly from the artists, donated by the artists, purchased from galleries, or were generous gifts from private donors. The works represent a variety of faith traditions and reflect the ecumenical and spiritual character of the gtu. Important artists include rembrandt, chagall and rouault. Together these works capture the intimacy of creation, presenting a visual theology to the public.
