Up to 14 families reside at the shelter at one time for an average of four to six months. Families include single dads, single moms, and couples. Families that come to sos make a commitment to change their lives by striving for a future with permanent housing, stable income, and a resource base to obtain long-term stability. Each family develops a plan with a case manager and reviews and updates it weekly to make sure they are on track. Life skills education is another vital component to ensure families can sustain self-sufficiency after leaving the shelter. Local banks, credit unions, and individuals volunteer their time to lead classes at the shelter on money management, credit reports, smart shopping, and self-esteem, to name a few.\n\nThe empowerment program includes cope, rollercoasters, da vinci girls, racial justice, and case management services to families experiencing homelessness. Cope is a one-time, four-hour seminar provided for parents who are going through divorce. Instructors are mental health professionals that insure parents leave the seminar feeling they have better understanding and new tools for helping their children thrive and be happy during the transition. Rollercoasters is a divorce education program for children, to help them express fears and feelings they might not otherwise share, and to understand what to expect in the transition of divorce or separation. Ywca salem da vinci girls program is an after school program for girls in 3rd-5th grades that explores areas of science, math, and technology through hands on experiments and activities. The ywca strives to help girls realize their potential to succeed in jobs where they have been traditionally underrepresented. Our community is home to people of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages, religious beliefs, races, physical abilities, languages, ages and sexual orientations. Ywca salem partners with other agencies to help create a community focused on living in peace and unity. Empowerment program staff provides case management services to families living at ywca sos to help them develop a plan around the individual needs of each family.\n\nThe ywca women's health program offers education, support and access to screening services in marion and polk counties.
