Founded on the mission \"to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,\" CHRISTUS is challenged to reach out to, and beyond, the more than 60 communities we serve to help those in need. The vision of CHRISTUS Health, as a Catholic, faith-based ministry, is to be a leader, a partner and an advocate in the creation of innovative health and wellness solutions that improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God's healing presence and love. CHRISTUS Health Utah responds to the health care needs through services provided at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Villa and CHRISTUS Marian Center, a comprehensive facility devoted to improving the quality of life for seniors. CHRISTUS Health Utah is located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and serves as the state's only Catholic health care provider. The area it serves includes a population of more than 456,000 individuals. Touching the lives of the people around us is what makes CHRISTUS Health Utah stand apart. With a genuine concern for each resident's well being, assistance is provided for senior individuals dealing with physical, emotional or spiritual concerns. By collaborating with communities, churches, businesses, and other health care organizations, CHRISTUS Health Utah has strengthened its role as a major provider of comprehensive, accessible long-term care for seniors. Furthermore, investment in community services would not be possible without dedicated employees and volunteers. They help to build strong relationships between the hospitals and other health care ministries and the communities, nurturing CHRISTUS' mission to meet the needs and make a difference in the lives of others. Our employees work both inside and outside the walls of our health care facilities and are committed to reaching beyond the traditional hospital walls to help our communities maintain good health. Understanding the need to provide access to health care to as much of our publics as possible, CHRISTUS Health participates in government-sponsored health care programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, CHAMPUS, TRICARE and others. In addition, we provide specific programs to provide discounted services to those in need who do not have medical insurance or who do not participate in government-sponsored programs. CHRISTUS Health Utah provides a range of long-term care services to the people from the communities it serves. It conducts its activities and serves its healthcare purpose without regard to race, color, creed, religion, gender, orientation, disability, age or national origin. CHRISTUS St. Joseph Villa provides long-term nursing care, offering personal care assistance in private and semi-private rooms for individuals requiring continuous medical care, and a special care unit for Alzheimer's and other dementia residents. In addition, it provides independent apartments for seniors who need few services to remain independent, assisted living for individuals who need some physical assistance and a transitional care unit for those needing skilled nursing care or rehabilitation after a hospital stay to complete their recuperation. The facility also provides a children's daycare center offering services to children and young infants during daytime hours. The CHRISTUS Marian Center provides behavioral health services through both inpatient and outpatient programs. During Fiscal Year 2010, CHRISTUS Health Utah served an average of almost 170 residents per day in nursing home and long-term care for a total 62,283 resident days for the year. Additionally, CHRISTUS Health Utah served an average of just over 36 residents per day for a total 12,952 Assisted Living days for the year and an average of almost 52 residents per day for a total 18,984 Independent living days. In addition, there is a hospital daily average of 10.2 patients for a total 3,735 patient days. As a not-for-profit organization and as part of CHRISTUS Health, a regional governing board guides CHRISTUS Health Utah. This board is comprised largely of independent community members representing the area we serve. We are privileged to have an open medical staff comprised of qualified physicians who work with us to provide care to our communities. All qualified physicians are granted privileges to serve with us in our hospitals through a thorough and comprehensive credentialing process.\n\nCommunity benefit reporting - charity care and medicaid christus adheres to the catholic health association's a guide for planning and reporting community benefit (2008), and complies with the state of texas requirements for reporting. Community benefit, reported as unpaid costs, includes both charity care and community services. To the limits of its resources, christus health is an institution of purely public charity; thus, the most tangible expression of christus health's charitable purpose is the provision of health care services to those persons who are unable to pay. This falls into two categories: charity care and unpaid government indigent care. In keeping with the mission, values, and vision of christus health, christus health provides charity care services in a manner that respects the dignity of the patients and their families. Charity care is provided without charge or at a charge that is less than the usual charge for such services. The determination as to the amount to be charged, if any, is made according to a patient's ability to pay as determined by the established eligibility criteria. For uninsured patients whose economic circumstances place them at or under 200 percent of the federal poverty level (fpl), services are provided without any expectation of payment. Uninsured patients, whose economic circumstances place them between 200 and 400 percent of fpl are charged based on a sliding scale, and those above 400 percent receive discounts based on the uninsured fee schedule. No patient is refused necessary medical care due to inability to pay. Christus health is an active participant in the states of texas and louisiana medicaid programs. Those programs seek to provide payment for health care services to individuals who meet certain financial and other requirements. Financial requirements include evaluation of both assets and income.\n\nOther government-sponsored services in addition to the provision of charity care and other community services christus health provides services to persons covered under government-sponsored programs, including medicare and tricare. The non-reimbursed costs of these services are not included in reports prepared following catholic health association guidelines. Christus health provides services to persons covered under the federal medicare program, and in fact, this is the largest single payor classification of patients served by this health system. The payment rate for inpatient services is on a case rate, calculated based on the diagnostic-related group (drg) into which the patient is categorized. Outpatient services are reimbursed per the medicare fee schedule. Christus health also participates in the tricare standard program and many of our hospitals contract with the managed care support contractor for the south region to provide services under the provision of tricare prime.\n\nProgram service accomplishment #4 community services for the broader community the greatest share of these expenses is for educating health care professionals. Helping to prepare future health care professionals is a distinguishing characteristic of not-for-profit health care and constitutes a significant community benefit. Christus health utah provides clinical training services to students from the university of utah, utah career college, wasatch certified nursing assistant program and salt lake community college. Medical students and gerontology students come to learn about the services we offer. During fiscal year 2010, 702 students received training services, which amounted to 10,530 supervised clinical hours. In addition, our medical director supervises family practice residents during their rotation in geriatrics at our facility. Christus health has used cash donations as a vehicle to help our communities. Additionally, we provided financial resources through community health improvement services to support causes like the fight against breast cancer, alzheimer education and support, provision of a continuum of care for our elderly, and for many other equally worthy purposes. During FY2010, christus health advocated for improving public policies, working to establish and in some instances augment grassroots advocacy and greater access to health care services for the constituents we serve. Program service expense = $193,708 grants = $0 program service revenue = $0 program service accomplishment #5 community services for the poor and underserved rooted in our mission and tradition, the founders and sponsors of christus health and those who co-minister with them seek new and innovative ways of delivering quality heath care that is both affordable and accessible to all. Today, more than ever, we must aim to improve the total health status of the community through programs that place our services where they are needed most, with special attention and preference given to programs that support and benefit the health and welfare of the poor and underserved. Community services for the poor and underserved represent the unpaid cost of services provided for which a patient is not billed, or for which a fee has been assessed that recovers only a portion of the cost of the rendered service. This category includes initiatives that reach out to those in need through community health and social programs. These programs seek justice for the vulnerable and work to bring about changes in our political and economic systems. The programs cover a broad spectrum of services from community clinics to immunizations for children and seniors, meals on wheels, transportation services, home repair projects and a variety of other social services. Some examples of christus health community benefits accounted for under community services for the poor and underserved include financial and in-kind contributions. with the ethical and moral teachings of the roman catholic church.","primary_activities":"COMMITMENT TO BENEFITING OUR COMMUNITIES - PATIENT CARE SERVICES CHRISTUS Health Utah is part of CHRISTUS Health, formed in 1999 to strengthen the 146-year-old, faith-based health care ministries of the Congregations of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston and San Antonio. Understanding the need to provide access to health care to as much of our public as possible, CHRISTUS Health participates in government-sponsored health care programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, CHAMPUS, TRICARE and others. During Fiscal Year 2011, CHRISTUS Health Utah operated the facilities from July 1, 2010 through January 31, 2011, until sold. During that time, CHRISTUS Health Utah served an average of almost 153 residents per day in nursing home and long-term care facilities for a total 32,896 resident days. Additionally, CHRISTUS Health Utah served an average of just over 34 residents per day for a total 7,381 assisted Living days for the year and an average of almost 47 residents per day for a total 10,057 independent living days for the year. In addition, there is a hospital daily average of 10.2 patients for a total 2,248 patient days. As a not-for-profit organization and as part of CHRISTUS Health, a regional governing board guides CHRISTUS Health Utah. The board was comprised largely of independent community members representing the area we served through 1/31/2011, which is the date of the sale of Christus Health Utah facilities.\n\nCommunity benefit reporting - charity care and medicaid christus adheres to the catholic health association's a guide for planning and reporting community benefit (2008), and complies with the state of texas requirements for reporting. Christus health also participates in the tricare standard program and many of our hospitals contract with the managed care support contractor for the south region to provide services under the provision of tricare prime.\n\nChristus health utah operated under the following names until the facilities were sold on february 1, 2011: christus marian center christus st. Joseph villa changes in how the organization conducts programs and services form 990, part iii, line 3 christus health utah's facilities were sold on january 31, 2011 and operations were transfered to new owners. After two years of research and analysis by the board of directors of christus health, local facility management and the sisters of charity of the incarnate word of houston and san antonio, the decision was made to seek a local owner due to the trend of senior healthcare facilities located adjacent to hospitals. St. Joseph villa was christus health's only healthcare facility located in utah.\n\nCommunity services for the broader community the greatest share of these expenses is for educating health care professionals. In addition, our medical director supervises family practice residents during their rotation in geriatrics at our facility.
