SCP staff along with UC Cooperative Extension, UC Integrated Pest Management and other technical experts provide advice, support and education to help growers implement practices that reduce agricultures pesticide impacts on our watersheds. Accomplishments for 2014 include: Enrollment of 42 fields (cotton and alfalfa) and almond orchards in Fresno, Madera and Merced Counties. Provided growers with weekly field scouting report of pests and beneficial insects in each of their enrolled fields or orchards. Ensured access to expert technical support, which enabled them to reduce their use of the most toxic chemicals used on the three crops, thereby benefiting the watershed in the rural communities where they farm. Implementation of best management practices including use of pheromone traps in almonds, annual hedgerows in cotton, releases of beneficial insects, strip cutting in alfalfa, and reduced risk materials for pest control. Over the project area growers of alfalfa, almonds and cotton were able to reduce their use of chlorpyrifos and diazinon (organophosphate chemicals targeted for reduction by State Water) in 2014 resulting in decreased pesticide loading of organophosphate pesticides in the San Joaquin River watershed. The North Face created a short video to capture the process for making the garment and it included both the growers and SCP director Gibbs. On October 23 and 24, 40 students and faculty members from Otis College in Los Angeles came for a cotton tour. The students started out viewing Windfall Farms hedgerow and colored cotton. The students were invited to pick the cotton and even walked through the adjacent almond orchard where many of them saw almonds on trees for the first time. The next day the students had a tour of Pacific Pima gin where manager Ron Nimo explained how the fiber is ginned and what happens to it when it leaves the gin. Then on October 30, SCP hosted the annual cotton farm tour. This year the tour was generously sponsored by The North Face (TNF) clothing brand. Promotion of Cleaner CottonSCP has been working on developing a market for the cotton that project growers produced. SCP has trademarked this reduced risk fiber with the name of Cleaner Cotton and promoted the fiber to the textile industry. Time was spent in 2013 meeting with apparel brands and promoting the locally grown fiber and seeking ways to insert this fiber into the supply chains of the brands and spinning mills. In 2013, SCP committed to the purchase of ten bales of Cleaner Cotton which have been shipped to North Carolina for spinning. The 2013 SCP Farm Tour and other presentations by staff and marketing consultant Lynda Grose helped to further the idea of rewarding the SCP growers in the marketplace. The grant commenced on January 1, 2013 and SCP has now completed the first year of the two-year contract. The funding for the project is $483,720. The State Water funded education and demonstration project is designed to promote agricultural practices that encourage clean water and reduce agricultural pollution in regional watersheds. This is accomplished first by educating growers about agricultural water pollution, reduced risk practices, environmental stewardship and dealing with increasing regulation and constraints on growing as usual. A second focus is on helping growers with on farm technical issues, implementation of practices to reduce pesticide and fertilizer use, showing them how to document their environmental footprint and compiling data to show the effectiveness of the project. The project scope includes not just cotton, but also almonds and alfalfa, since the majority of cotton growers in the region grow one or more of the three crops. Growers of alfalfa, almonds and cotton are invited to participate and enroll an orchard or acres of cotton or alfalfa. SCP staff along with UC Cooperative Extension and UC Integrated Pest Management and other technical experts provide advice, support and education to help growers implement practices that reduce agricultures impacts on our watersheds. Accomplishments for 2013 include: Enrollment of 35 fields (cotton and alfalfa) and almond orchards in Fresno, Madera and Merced Counties. Provided growers with weekly field scouting reports of pests and beneficial insects in each of their enrolled fields or orchards. Ensured access to expert technical support, which enabled growers to reduce their use of the most toxic chemicals used on the three crops, thereby benefiting the watershed in the rural communities where they farm. Implementation of best management practices including use of pheromone traps in almonds, annual hedgerows in cotton, releases of beneficial insects, strip cutting in alfalfa, and reduced risk materials for pest control. Over the project area growers of alfalfa, almonds and cotton were able to reduce their use of chlorpyrifos and diazinon (organophosphate chemicals targeted for reduction by State Water) in 2013 resulting in decreased pesticide loading of organophosphate pesticides in the San Joaquin River watershed. Time was spent in 2013 meeting with apparel brands and promoting the locally grown fiber and seeking ways to insert this fiber into the supply chains of the brands and spinning mills. In 2013, SCP committed to the purchase of ten bales of Cleaner Cotton which have been shipped to North Carolina for spinning. This is a three-year grant for $749,997 with all work to be completed by June 30, 2019.The SCP/San Joaquin Sustainable Farming Project education and demonstration project was designed to promote agricultural practices that encourage clean water and reduce agricultural pollution in regional watersheds. This is accomplished first by educating growers about agricultural water pollution, reduced risk practices, environmental stewardship and how to deal with increasing regulation and constraints on growing as usual. A second focus is on helping growers with on farm technical issues, implementation of practices to reduce pesticide and fertilizer use, showing them how to document their environmental footprint and compiling data to show the effectiveness of the project. The project scope includes not just cotton, but also almonds and alfalfa since the majority of cotton growers in the region grow one or more of the three crops. Growers of alfalfa, almonds and cotton are invited to participate and enroll an orchard or acres of cotton or alfalfa. SCP staff along with UC Cooperative Extension, UC Integrated Pest Management and other technical experts provide advice, support and education to help growers implement practices that reduce agricultures pesticide impacts on our watersheds. Accomplishments for 2016 include:Enrollment of forty fields (cotton and alfalfa) and almond orchards in Fresno, Madera and Merced Counties.Provided growers with weekly field scouting report of pests and beneficial insects in each of their enrolled fields or orchards. Ensured access to expert technical support, which enabled them to reduce their use of the most toxic chemicals used on the three crops, thereby benefiting the watershed in the rural communities where they farm. Implementation of best management practices including use of pheromone traps in almonds, annual hedgerows in cotton, releases of beneficial insects, strip cutting in alfalfa, and reduced risk materials for pest control.Over the project area growers of alfalfa, almonds and cotton were able to reduce their use of chlorpyrifos and diazinon (organophosphate chemicals targeted for reduction by State Water) in 2016 resulting in decreased pesticide loading of organophosphate pesticides in the San Joaquin River watershed.Held six informational field days, which included cropping experts, pest management technical advice, marketing ideas and whole farm planning.Produced a program newsletter that went out to over 1,500 growers in the region. Published a weekly blog during the growing season called: \"Sustainable Ag: A View From the Field\" at http://centralvalleyfarmscout.blogspot.com. Close to 90,000 readers have viewed this popular blog since it was started in 2011.
