Texas Heart Institute's Director for the Center for Women's Heart and Vascular Health, Stephanie Coulter, MD spoke about gender differences surrounding cardiovascular disease. Board Breakfast Series Continues This year, the Charities scheduled a series of Board Breakfast meetings open to all Board members. The Charities' Board Breakfast meetings have focused on leadership, national and international exposure resulting from research-focused publications and presentations, as well as current and upcoming research and collaborative projects. This series of breakfast meetings is intended to encourage more frequent and meaningful interactions between Board members and Charities' staff and to provide a forum for in-depth discussion into the various topics. The Charities Receives Outstanding Foundation Award In October The Charities was awarded the Outstanding Foundation Award by ESCAPE Family Resource Center. Research Presentations Charities' Research Staff Presented at the 137th American Public Health Association Annual Meeting The Charities' community-based research was highlighted in two presentations at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Kimberly Kay Lopez, DrPH, Director of Community Health Practice, and Molly Ford, Research Associate, presented \"City of Houston Study: The Role of Partnerships in Community Health Research\"; Jenita Parekh, MPH, Senior Research Associate, presented \"Youth Empowerment Evaluation to Improve After-School Programming.\" More than 13,000 national and international physicians, administrators, nurses, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists attend APHA annually. The Charities' Proposal for Workshop Development Accepted at the Community-Campus Partnerships for Health Conference The Charities' research team hosted a workshop in Portland, Oregon, at the national bi-annual meeting of the Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH). The title of the workshop was: \"A Vision for Building Research Capacity in Neighborhoods and Community Organizations: How to Achieve the Vision, including Lessons Learned.\" The goal of the workshop was to offer training on Charities' methods and models for community-based research. CCPH is the primary professional organization for community-based participatory research practitioners. Epidemiologist Linda Highfield, PhD, Presents Papers on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Health As a guest lecturer, Dr. Highfield presented \"GIS for Public Health Disease Surveillance\" at Texas A&M University in April, and \"Statistical Methods for Measuring Spatial Autocorrelation\" at the University of Texas School of Public Health in May. The Charities' CHIS Manager Participated in UH Annual Geographic Information Science Day The Charities' Community Health Information System Manager, Linda Highfield, Ph.D., was invited to demonstrate the Charities' online, interactive health information system, including Project Safety Net and the Breast Health Portal at the University of Houston-hosted conference: Annual Geographic Information Science Day. Participants included City of Houston, Harris County, Houston-Galveston Area Council, other universities, NASA, and other providers. Next year, Dr. Highfield will attend the Texas A&M University GIS Day, which has a national scope. Counting on Quality of Place Symposium Dr. Linda Highfield and Dr. Jane Peranteau attended the Counting on Quality of Place Symposium sponsored by the Center for Houston's Future. The symposium was held to launch the 2010 Environment Indicator Report, which featured the Charities' chapter on health. Dr. Highfield was interviewed by KTRK TV Channel 13 regarding the health disparities within our local area. Charities Presents Paper at International Conference Marlynn May, PhD, the Charities' Wimberly Scholar, and Charities' staff Celene Meyer and Jane Peranteau, PhD presented a paper on \"Criteria for Successful Community Partnerships: the Episcopal Homeless Initiative\" at the 2010 Australian Universities Community Engagement Association's National Conference held at the University of Tasmania in Launceston, Tasmania, July 4-8. The Charities' Center for Community Based Research was featured here for the first time internationally. One significant outcome of the conference is that the Charities has been asked to sponsor the 2012 International Conference for the Community Campus Partnerships for Health. The Charities' community-based participatory research model and the grant recipients will be front and center of the 2012 conference. Externally Funded Research Projects The Charities in Partnership with Susan B. Komen for the Cure Susan B. Komen for the Cure, an organization supporting breast cancer research, contracted with the Charities to complete a community assessment in Fort Bend County focusing on access to care and awareness of breast health issues. A community advisory group was convened to help inform the study design and implementation. A Community Research Team was recruited and trained through the Charities' Center for Community-Based Research. Ten local women were trained as new community team members. They were specifically recruited to assist with the breast health assessment. Training included ethics of research, informed consent, and skills on Community-Based Participatory Research approaches, including group facilitation and note-taking. The Community Research Team conducted a survey, key informant interviews and participatory groups. Area providers and uninsured women between 35-64 years old identified the need for services in rural areas of the county. The findings will be used to direct Komen's grantmaking. A final report was produced in June. Avon Foundation Breast Health Project Begins The purpose of this funded project is to assess underserved African-American women's ability to access breast health services in Harris County. Breast cancer incidence rates are lowest and mortality rates are highest for African-American women. The Charities was funded $75,000 to establish epidemiological identification and location of these women, a demographic and spatial profile of targeted neighborhoods, followed by participatory groups and a survey conducted by a trained community-based research team. The Research Team has completed the epidemiological preparation and has begun building a community collaborative to advise the study, identifying key informants. Interviews are underway and the project is scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 2011. Tracking Breast Health Screenings in Ten Counties Through funding from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas and in partnership with The Rose, the Charities' epidemiology team will aid in tracking breast health screenings in ten counties. The larger project is a breast and cervical cancer education initiative with underserved women with the goal of increasing screenings by 25%. The Charities will aid in developing a specialized tracking tool that can be used by other organizations. A comprehensive literature review, two surveys and a quarterly report to the State have been completed. The project will conclude in December 2010. Reaching Latinas with the Folic Acid Message The Charities anticipates receiving a grant from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to review the next steps on neural tubes defect prevention. The project should reach 500 at-risk Hispanic women in Harris County between the ages of 18-45 with education and follow-up to help prevent neural tube defects in infants. The Charities will work with community-based organizations and their trained promotoras to conduct the intervention. Methodist-Episcopal Mental Health Initiative focuses on Sunnyside The purpose of this unique partnership between the Charities and the Houston Area Conference of the United Methodist Church is to build sustainable community-level improvement in the mental health of underserved minority children and families. Sharing Community Health Leadership Expertise Nationally The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation asked Dr. Bray, and Director for the Charities Center for Collaborative Leadership and Grantmaking, Celene Meyer, to review nominations for the Foundation's annual Community Health Leadership Awards. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards ten $125,000 awards to unrecognized community health leaders each year. This is the second year Dr. Bray and Mrs. Meyer have been invited to be part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation review process Healthy Living Matters: Connecting Policy to the Future The Charities continued its work as an active member of the Healthy Living Matters collaborative. Called together with a $2.5 million grant from the Houston Endowment, this group is a multi-sector, public/private partnership of local leaders committed to obesity prevention. The Charities helped to determine the mission, scope and operation of this two-year planning initiative to curb childhood obesity in Houston/Harris County through policy action for system and environmental change. HPV Immunizations Services on Project Safety Net Project Safety Net added Human papillomavirus (HPV) immunizations to the list of searchable services on the navigation web site. The addition of HPV immunizations to Project Safety Net enables Community Health Workers to easily identify nearby clinics that can provide this important immunization. Harris County Healthcare Alliance Request For Proposal Review Committee Dr. Jeanne Hanks served on the grant review team for the Community Clinic Funders' Collaborative. This Collaborative is administered by the Harris County Healthcare Alliance and is entrusted with making strategic investments from a pool of funding established by twelve local philanthropic and corporate organizations. Alliance member community clinics and partner entities compete for funds through a competitive Request for Proposals process. Successful proposals will strengthen and support the primary care safety net system in Houston/Harris County. Project Safety Net, Breast Health Portal Showcased at Statewide Community Health Workers Conference In August, Ms. Lyn Widlaski, Executive Director of the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas, presented information about the Charities' Project Safety Net and the Breast Health Portal to the Community Health Workers Conference in San Marcos, Texas. National Journal Manuscript Review Dr. Patricia Gail Bray was invited to review a manuscript that was submitted to the Johns Hopkins journal, Progress on Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action. The manuscript was entitled \"Health Needs Assessment in Partnership with Community and Community Based Organizations\" with Mohammad Mahmood as the contact author. The journal is multidisciplinary and includes articles about research, education and program evaluation that use the principles of community-based participatory research to stimulate changes in health policy and practice. Lectures at UT School of Public Health Dr. Jeanne Hanks was a guest lecturer for the Introduction to Management, Policy and Community Health class at University of Texas School of Public Health. She provided an overview of the \"Safety Net\" system in Harris County and the potential impact of the 1115 Medicaid Waiver and the Affordable Care Act on the availability of health care for uninsured and underinsured individuals. The class participated in a lively discussion about the need for safety net care, the disparities in access experienced by low-income people, and the health systems used by other counties. Linda Highfield, PhD, MS, Director of Quantitative Research, gave a Brown Bag lecture at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health on June 1, 2012. Dr. Highfield was invited to discuss her experience working in community health practice. The lecture was part of the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health's Seminar Series which features guest speakers throughout the year. Center for Houston's Future Summer Salon Panel Members of the healthcare, business, and education communities gathered to discuss key findings about the link between education and health. Appointment to University of Texas School of Public Health Charities Director of Quantitative Research Linda Highfield, PhD, MS was appointed to the faculty at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health. Sharing Community Health Leadership Expertise Nationally The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation asked Dr. Bray, and Director for the Charities Center for Collaborative Leadership and Grantmaking, Celene Meyer, to review nominations for the Foundation's annual Community Health Leadership Awards. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards ten $125,000 awards to unrecognized community health leaders each year. This is the second year Dr. Bray and Mrs. Meyer have been invited to be part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation review process Healthy Living Matters: Connecting Policy to the Future The Charities continued its work as an active member of the Healthy Living Matters collaborative. Called together with a $2.5 million grant from the Houston Endowment, this group is a multi-sector, public/private partnership of local leaders committed to obesity prevention. The Charities helped to determine the mission, scope and operation of this two-year planning initiative to curb childhood obesity in Houston/Harris County through policy action for system and environmental change. HPV Immunizations Services on Project Safety Net Project Safety Net added Human papillomavirus (HPV) immunizations to the list of searchable services on the navigation web site. The addition of HPV immunizations to Project Safety Net enables Community Health Workers to easily identify nearby clinics that can provide this important immunization. Harris County Healthcare Alliance Request For Proposal Review Committee Dr. Jeanne Hanks served on the grant review team for the Community Clinic Funders' Collaborative. This Collaborative is administered by the Harris County Healthcare Alliance and is entrusted with making strategic investments from a pool of funding established by twelve local philanthropic and corporate organizations. Alliance member community clinics and partner entities compete for funds through a competitive Request for Proposals process. Successful proposals will strengthen and support the primary care safety net system in Houston/Harris County. Project Safety Net, Breast Health Portal Showcased at Statewide Community Health Workers Conference In August, Ms. Lyn Widlaski, Executive Director of the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas, presented information about the Charities' Project Safety Net and the Breast Health Portal to the Community Health Workers Conference in San Marcos, Texas. National Journal Manuscript Review Dr. Patricia Gail Bray was invited to review a manuscript that was submitted to the Johns Hopkins journal, Progress on Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action. The manuscript was entitled \"Health Needs Assessment in Partnership with Community and Community Based Organizations\" with Mohammad Mahmood as the contact author. The journal is multidisciplinary and includes articles about research, education and program evaluation that use the principles of community-based participatory research to stimulate changes in health policy and practice. Lectures at UT School of Public Health Dr. Jeanne Hanks was a guest lecturer for the Introduction to Management, Policy and Community Health class at University of Texas School of Public Health. She provided an overview of the \"Safety Net\" system in Harris County and the potential impact of the 1115 Medicaid Waiver and the Affordable Care Act on the availability of health care for uninsured and underinsured individuals. The class participated in a lively discussion about the need for safety net care, the disparities in access experienced by low-income people, and the health systems used by other counties. Linda Highfield, PhD, MS, Director of Quantitative Research, gave a Brown Bag lecture at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health on June 1, 2012. Dr. Highfield was invited to discuss her experience working in community health practice. The lecture was part of the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health's Seminar Series which features guest speakers throughout the year. The seminar was entitled \"Research Approaches in Community Health Practice: Applied Examples from the Field.\" The seminar provided examples of the Charities' approach to community health and a discussion of the research-practice divide. Center for Houston's Future Summer Salon Panel Members of the healthcare, business, and education communities gathered to discuss key findings about the link between education and health. The briefing and subsequent dialogue, hosted by Center for Houston's Future, was the second of the Center's Summer Salons, which connect cross-sector leadership to develop concrete solutions that improve the region's sustainability and competitiveness. The panel, hosted by Dr. Patricia Gail Bray and moderated by Ken Janda, President & CEO of Community Health Choice, Inc. focused on the findings of the 2012 Community Indicator Report on Human Capital Development and Education. The session examined the powerful connection between education and health and the role our schools play in preparing children for academic success and healthier lives. Center for Community Based Research National Environmental Public Health Presentation Charities Director of Qualitative Research Karen Jaynes Williams, PhD, MHSA presented at The National Institutes of Health-National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences' (NIEHS) Partnership for Environmental Public Health (PEPH) Conference March 7-8, 2012 in Washington, D.C. PEPH brings together scientists, community members, educators, healthcare providers, public health officials, and policy makers in advancing the impact of environmental public health research at the local, regional, and national level. Dr. Williams presented with John Sullivan, MA, Co-Director of the Public Forum and Toxic Assistance, NIEHS Center in Environmental Toxicology at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Their presentation titled, \"Theater of the Oppressed: A Tool for Equal Power Sharing in Creating Partnerships, Mobilizing Local Knowledge, and Speaking to Power\" will teach participants to use techniques to generate new knowledge around specific conditions of concern across community, academic, and policy sectors. Appointment to University of Texas School of Public Health Charities Director of Quantitative Research Linda Highfield, PhD, MS was appointed to the faculty at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health. Dr. Highfield's appointment is in the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health within the Community Health Practice specialty. Dr. Highfield's first course is co-taught with Laura McKieran, DrPH, Associate Professor, San Antonio Regional Campus at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. This graduate level course focused on Community Health Assessment methods and had 30 doctoral students. Dr. Highfield also taught Mixed Methods Research for Community Health Practice, focusing on the real-world application of mixed methods research in health practice. The Communications Committee, chaired by the Honorable Chase Untermeyer, will ensure that Charities activities are presented in a clear and consistent manner to the widest possible audience. Charities Partners with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Houston Endowment Regarding Obesity Dr. Patricia Gail Bray, Executive Director, was invited to participate in a county-wide steering committee formed by the Houston Endowment and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to Prevent Childhood Obesity. The Steering Committee was formed to address: Which local and state policy initiatives can have the greatest impact for addressing social determinants of health and reducing childhood obesity? What role does faith-based communities, private and public sectors and other stakeholders play in contributing to the reduction of childhood obesity? The goal of the steering committee is to determine how we can play a meaningful role in developing a community wide movement in Houston. A $2.5 million grant was awarded to the Harris County Environmental and Public Health Department as a result of the steering committee efforts. The Charities will continue to be a part of the grant activities during the next eighteen months. Charities Welcomes New Board Members Dr. Michelle Lyn and her husband Kurt hosted a Charities Board meet and greet in their home on March 10, 2011. New board members Mr. Jonathon Clarkson, Dr. Luisa Franzini and The Rev. Susan Kennard were introduced to current board members. Charities Board Retreat Held April 8th and 9th The Charities' Board joined the System Board for a joint Retreat on April 8th at Camp Allen in Navasota Texas. The Rev. Paul Holley and Mr. Lee Hogan, from The Anglican Health Network, were our guest speakers. Friday evening was capped off with a wonderful dinner in the Tellepsen dining room. We enjoyed several presentations by Bishop C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop Dena A. Harrison and Dr. Michelle Lyn on Saturday. New Charities Web Site and Interactive Portals Launched On March 8, the new Charities Web site www.slehc.org went live after a year of planning and design. The interactive portals for Project Safety Net and the Breast Health Portal now allow visitors to customize the data for more informative reports for use in health planning and requests for funding. The site includes a streamlined delivery of information to the various visitors including researchers, planners, providers, peer funders and those seeking health services for themselves or clients. The upgraded interactive portals will include the 2010 U.S.. Census data as it is made available. In addition, the site will feature video clips that aid in explaining the unique nature and impact of the Charities' research-informed grantmaking. Plans are currently underway to take the Project Safety Net into the other 56 counties of the Diocese of Texas. Charities Recognition Campaign on KUHF To coincide with the launch of the new www.slehc.org, the Charities worked with KUHF to include 15-second spots directing listeners to the Charities' Web site. The initial 16 spots aired during drive time in March. The next phase in this hopeful collaboration is to meet with the KUHF programming and community outreach team to discuss innovative partnership opportunities. Charities Community Health Leadership Expertise Sought Nationally Dr. Bray, and Director of Grants and Evaluation, Celene Meyer, were asked by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to review nominations for their annual Community Health Leadership Awards. Celene was later invited to conduct a site visit to one of the finalists for their annual Community Health Leadership Awards. The two-day site visit to Delaware included interviews with the nominees' family, friends, clients, and colleagues as well as local and state community leaders. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards ten $125,000 awards to unrecognized community health leaders each year. David S. Buck, MD Named 2011 Community Health Leader The Charities honored David S. Buck, MD, President and Founder of Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston, as the recipient of the 2011 Community Health Leadership Award. Inspired by his work with Mother Teresa while in India nearly thirty years ago, Dr. Buck has dedicated himself to improving the health of the homeless and underserved population of Houston for the past 14 years. In 2005 the Charities created the Community Health Leadership Award to recognize an \"unsung hero\" in our communities. Charities Participates For the Third Year in the Center for Houston's Future Annual Indicator Report Dr. Patricia Gail Bray and several members of her staff have written a chapter for the 2012 Center for Houston's Future Annual Indicator Report entitled, The Human Capital Development: Early Childhood Development through Workforce Preparedness Report. The Center for Houston's Future report establishes key metrics that help the eight county region measure progress over time in several areas of public education. Dr. Bray's chapter specifically addresses the impact of education on health. Charities to Participate in Leaders in Faith Based Healthcare Conference in East Jerusalem Dr. Patricia Gail Bray, on behalf of David Fine, participated in the Leaders in Faith Based Healthcare conference in East Jerusalem in November 2011. The organizers of the Jerusalem conference belong to the International Network of Leaders in Faith Based Health Care focusing on local expressions of leadership practice. The network was established in November 2008 as leaders from different countries and representing different faith traditions came together to meet at The Carter Center in Atlanta. The network sees its work in the tradition of the Christian Medical Commission of the World Council of Churches. The main objective of the network is to facilitate an exchange of leadership ideas, experiences and practices, to mutually reflect on the distinct identity and role of faith based health care institutions, and to join efforts in developing innovative models of leadership. The network seeks to create space for engaging both practitioners and researchers to meet and reflect together. It also seeks to facilitate dialogue and cooperation between institutions in different social and cultural contexts, paying special attention to the challenges and experiences of faith based health care institutions globally. Research Community-Campus Partnership for Health: Community University Expo 2011 The Charities' research staff submitted six abstracts to be presented at the international conference, which features the joint Community-Campus Partnership for Health and the University Expo. All six abstracts were accepted for presentation. The Charities promotes community health across the Diocese and targets the prevention of disease among the underserved. 2011 Year in Review Operations Communications Committee Begin Bi-Monthly Meetings in January The new, special Communications Committee was approved by the Board of Directors and began hosting regularly scheduled meetings at the first of the year. The Communications Committee, chaired by the Honorable Chase Untermeyer, will ensure that Charities activities are presented in a clear and consistent manner to the widest possible audience. Charities Partners with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Houston Endowment Regarding Obesity Dr. Patricia Gail Bray, Executive Director, was invited to participate in a county-wide steering committee formed by the Houston Endowment and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to Prevent Childhood Obesity. The Steering Committee was formed to address: Which local and state policy initiatives can have the greatest impact for addressing social determinants of health and reducing childhood obesity? What role does faith-based communities, private and public sectors and other stakeholders play in contributing to the reduction of childhood obesity? The goal of the steering committee is to determine how we can play a meaningful role in developing a community wide movement in Houston. A $2.5 million grant was awarded to the Harris County Environmental and Public Health Department as a result of the steering committee efforts. The Charities will continue to be a part of the grant activities during the next eighteen months. Charities Welcomes New Board Members Dr. Michelle Lyn and her husband Kurt hosted a Charities Board meet and greet in their home on March 10, 2011. New board members Mr. Jonathon Clarkson, Dr. Luisa Franzini and The Rev. Susan Kennard were introduced to current board members. Charities Board Retreat Held April 8th and 9th The Charities' Board joined the System Board for a joint Retreat on April 8th at Camp Allen in Navasota Texas. The Rev. Paul Holley and Mr. Lee Hogan, from The Anglican Health Network, were our guest speakers. Friday evening was capped off with a wonderful dinner in the Tellepsen dining room. We enjoyed several presentations by Bishop C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop Dena A. Harrison and Dr. Michelle Lyn on Saturday. New Charities Web Site and Interactive Portals Launched On March 8, the new Charities Web site www.slehc.org went live after a year of planning and design. The interactive portals for Project Safety Net and the Breast Health Portal now allow visitors to customize the data for more informative reports for use in health planning and requests for funding. The site includes a streamlined delivery of information to the various visitors including researchers, planners, providers, peer funders and those seeking health services for themselves or clients. The upgraded interactive portals will include the 2010 U.S. Census data as it is made available. In addition, the site will feature video clips that aid in explaining the unique nature and impact of the Charities' research-informed grantmaking. Plans are currently underway to take the Project Safety Net into the other 56 counties of the Diocese of Texas. Charities Recognition Campaign on KUHF To coincide with the launch of the new www.slehc.org, the Charities worked with KUHF to include 15-second spots directing listeners to the Charities' Web site. The initial 16 spots aired during drive time in March. The next phase in this hopeful collaboration is to meet with the KUHF programming and community outreach team to discuss innovative partnership opportunities. Charities Community Health Leadership Expertise Sought Nationally Dr. Bray, and Director of Grants and Evaluation, Celene Meyer, were asked by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to review nominations for their annual Community Health Leadership Awards. Celene was later invited to conduct a site visit to one of the finalists for their annual Community Health Leadership Awards. The two-day site visit to Delaware included interviews with the nominees' family, friends, clients, and colleagues as well as local and state community leaders. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards ten $125,000 awards to unrecognized community health leaders each year. David S. Buck, MD Named 2011 Community Health Leader The Charities honored David S. Buck, MD, President and Founder of Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston, as the recipient of the 2011 Community Health Leadership Award. Inspired by his work with Mother Teresa while in India nearly thirty years ago, Dr. Buck has dedicated himself to improving the health of the homeless and underserved population of Houston for the past 14 years.
