This voluntary program, offered at no charge, accepts families either pre-natally or at the birth of a child, and provides intensive-home-based services for a period of up to five years. The program's goal is to remove the risk for child abuse and neglect by nurturing a child's comprehensive developmental needs during the critical earliest years, ensuring consistent, timely and appropriate medical care for the child and family, and fostering increasing self-sufficiency for the family.Positive outcomes of the program include timely immunizations and wellness checks for children, improved parenting skills, dramatic increase in parent employment and education, reduction in domestic violence, greater social interaction within the community and virtually no reports of child abuse and neglect. HFI currently partners with several other human service organizations and agencies, among which are the Houston City Health Department, and the local College Bound Collaborative Initiative, to train staff and integrate these important services, thereby beginning to reach significantly greater numbers of families who will benefit from the comprehensive approach of the model.\n\nBuilding Strong Families - Demonstration Project: The project is one of the centerpieces of a broad national policy strategy to improve child well-being through family stabilization and healthy marriage formation and is specifically tailored to couples either expecting or who have just had a baby. It promotes healthy relationship development of the parents, improved adult communication, better parenting and employment skills, home financing and stress management.Building Strong Families is a unique collaboration of the Administration for Children and Families, the Texas Attorney General's Office, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Mathematica Policy Research, Inc, HFI, and our implementation partner, Healthy Families San Angelo. HFI is designated one of seven federal demonstration sites nationwide to determine the effectiveness of programs designed to improve relationship dynamics on low-income unmarried couples and their children.\n\nThe Community Doula Program: This existing, well-respected and well-researched \"mother mentor\" program was merged into HFI in January of 2007. It addresses the pre- and post-natal well-being of mothers and their babies, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, breast feeding, nutrition, and improving low birth weight outcomes.\n\nOTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: The Community Doula Program: This existing, well-respected and well-researched \"mother mentor\" program was merged into HFI in January of 2007. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Prevention Research Initiative: This initiative carries out retrospective research on HFI's program outcomes to better inform future prevention activity and the development of a training and technical support arm, which through the development of prevention curricula, the training of prevention models and approaches, and the education of human resources associated with the delivery of these assist others to implement and integrate prevention as a fundamental approach for improving the lives of children and families in Houston.\n\nThe Houston Nurse Family Partnership Consortium: Healthy Family Initiatives is the lead agency on the Houston replication of The NurseFamily Partnership model, a unique community health program that is based on evidence from randomized, controlled trials that improves the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of low-income, first-time parents and their children. Mothers served are partnered with a registered nurse early in their pregnancy and receive ongoing nurse home visits that continue through their child's second birthday.
