This is accomplished through several programs including the Building Strong Families through Crisis Prevention program. The main goals are to continue children's education in their originating school while addressing the families' immediate crisis and re-establishing housing stability. In order to further impact the community the United Way of Sarasota County offers the FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card, which helps people who don't have health insurance, or need medicine not covered by their insurance plan. Over 34,000 cards have been distributed locally and lower the cost of medicine by an average 35%. Individuals received a total discount of $87,509 equating to an average savings per claim of $21.47. In addition, there are 20 Community Partners that United Way provides financial and in-kind resources to for programming, initiatives, and special projects.\n\nFinancial Stability:The purpose of this program is to transform and stabilize our community by giving hard-working people and their families the opportunity to move toward financial independence. Our goals are to link more low-income households to financial educational programs, workforce development programs, and family support services; to provide low-wealth households the skills and tools to manage their money, save for the future, and build assets; to provide greater access to income sources and services that working families might not know exist. Financial Stability includes the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program which has increased the number of residents applying for EITC (Earned Income Tax Credits) and CTC (Child Tax Credits) with free tax preparation sites. Second year results included 9 permanent tax preparation sites in Sarasota, Venice, North Port and Arcadia with mobile outreach to Englewood, Laurel and Newtown. 59 trained VITA volunteers helped clients receive $1,343,919 in total refunds\n\nSuccess By Six:Key Success By 6 strategies are: raising awareness about early childhood development, improving access to critical health and human services and advocating for public policy that supports all children.
