The project involved grading, installing a cluvert crossing, building of inlet/outlet structures and vegetation planting. The project was primarily funded by the ncdenr-north carolina clean water management trust fund. Mid-east rc&d council, inc. Assisted with grantsmanship and served as project coordinator. Mercd is also involved in the on-going nc roanoke river region tourism project. This project provides technical and financial assistance to the roanoke river mayors association (rrma)to develop sustainable community-based tourism as a means of diversifying rural economy in eleven municipalities within the roanoke river valley. Mercd in partnership with ecu center for sustainable tourism, is providing grantsmanship and project administration through funding from the nc rural economic development center, inc. Mercd provided grantsmanship as well as project administration for a project to promote public recreation use of morotac park in martin county, nc. The community building represents one of the few public meeting locations in martin county and is located adjacent to the beautiful roanoke river with its vista views. A 1/4 mile+ shared-use fitness trail for non-motorized use was constructed, while also serving as a connector trail to the skewarkee trail; connecting downtown williamston to the roanoke river and moratoc park. Passive recreation improvements to meet adaag access and fishing guidelines and accessibility for the existing river-front deck, including construction of a new gazebo for increased shade and weather protection. Installation of a new, non-motorized small boating access to promote paddling along the roanoke river paddle trail. Improvements to moratoc park's campus including construction of new outdoor restroom facilities, picnic shelter, playground, adaag parking, and improved aesthetics. The approximately 650,000 project received funding through grants from the nc parks and recreation trust fund, nc division of water resources, and nc parks and recreation recreational trails program, with local match provided by the martin board of county commissioners.
