Sidewalk celebration: program description: volunteers go right into at risk communities delivering a relevant gospel message to children using puppets, drama, dance and music. Neighborhoods served: atlantis apartments, western bayside, campostella participants: 102 bookworm: program description: volunteer friendly, scripted reading program presented in low income communities. Program took place in community centers and in roc summer camps. For each book read the community center is awarded a new book for their library shelf. In addition children are rewarded for participating in the program. Neighborhoods served: atlantis apartments, friendship village, h2h (homeless to housing), participants: 50 tap (toddler and parent) program description: parents along with their toddlers/infants attend educational, job readiness and health workshops conducted through the school year. Summers provided a toddler and parent camp. Emphasis was placed on teaching parents how to educationally interact with their children as well as provide children education in recognition of colors, shapes and the development of fine motor skills. Job readiness skills as well as practical life skills in cleaning were taught to a committed group of women in atlantis apartments. Mock interviews were held. A nutritious lunch was served at each workshop. This year field trips included peach and strawberry picking and children's museum in portsmouth. Program was conducted in atlantis apartments diapers, children's books, cleaning supplies and groceries were provided for those attending. There were 43 participants. Capture the dream 2010 program description: capture the dream summer program provides a summer camp educational, social and character building experience for low income children. The camps have a rich history in the city of virginia beach of providing quality summer programs for the children it serves. Participants: 43 neighborhoods served: atlantis apartments, friendship village, bridle highlights included 1) performing arts program 2) swim lessons 3) reading program 4) curriculum about famous people who have overcome obstacles to achieve success in life 5) study of those who had paved the way for freedom 6) exercise program 7) nutrition program and 8) field trips. Homeless to housing (h2h) program description: this weekly program began as a response to the city of virginia beach department of housing's need to provide children and youth who are in transitional living situations ongoing educational and programming support. The young people gather for homework help, unique learning opportunities, enjoy a family style dinner and spend one on one time with committed volunteers and mentors. Once a month the parents are invited to dinner and to view their children's newly learned skills whether it be learning to play the drums, mime, swimming, photography or dance. This program has helped to graft these families back into our virginia beach community and provide much needed support.
