The mission of the ujima is to mobilize the community to respond and end domestic violence against women in the black community. This mission is actualized through research, public awareness and community engagement, and resource development. Ujima highlights and accomplishments: ujima has grown immensely during our first four years of service as a resource center for the department of health and human services. From the development and implementation of the sunrise series listening sessions, hosting regional meetings, engagement with researchers and practitioners, in addition to the provision of training and technical assistance, one of ujima's key findings was the continued need for culturally specific programming, research and policy responses that are centered in the lived experiences of the black community and particularly black survivors of family violence. During the past year, this need was highlighted as the country has been irrevocably impacted by the covid-19 economic and public health crisis, which has disparately impacted the black community. This, coupled with growing conversations about racial justice and the need for systems responses, resulted in ujima's technical assistance and training requests increasing exponentially. In response, the team developed policy and program initiatives aimed at addressing these issues. However, there remains the need for an increased investment in culturally specific programming and technical assistance that addresses historical and current inequities in access for communities of color. From october 1, 2019 - september 30, 2020 we reached over 5,000 people through training/community engagement activities (e.kg. Converences (15), workshops (22), webinars (15), listening sessions (2); trainings (12), site visits (19), technical assistance consultations (211), and information and referral responses (21).\n\nDccadv highlights and accomplishments: as for most organizations in the united states, 2020 started with our normal activities. Please see schedule o for complete descriptions of our program services. When the mayor of dc shifted the district's operations to telework and closed the schools, due to the covid-19 pandemic, many other businesses and nonprofits followed suit. The impact of covid-19 made the lifesaving supports available to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence more difficult to access. In response, dccadv worked to ensure that our member programs had access to constantly changing information and guidance, as well as available resources for their client's safety and their organizational health. The coalition attended board of director meetings of our member programs to ensure their leadership understood the impact of covid-19 on the organization's infrastructure, provided guidance to the district government- both the mayor's administration and the dc council- to include the needs of survivors in dc's response to the pandemic, and provided technical assistance to our partners in the homeless service sector who saw an increase of domestic violence in their client population. We worked with uber to secure 1,000 free rides for program staff and the survivors they serve. We identified a funding source for a members program's covid-19 emergency client response. We represented survivor needs during this time to local foundations, resulting in more private funds invested in domestic violence services. We secured the donation of kn95 masks for our member programs. Our commitment to our 16 member organizations during the unprecedented covid-19 global pandemic did not falter, and we continue to work diligently to provide ongoing support to our member organizations, which in turn enhances their ability to continue to deliver vital services to the community. During the covid-19 pandemic, we continued to support our member and partner programs in several way, including providing assistance in gaining access to funding and infrastructure support, policy support, and ensuring their continued connectivity to vital resources.\n\nThis year we prepared for and transitioned two incubated dccadv programs (the person center and ujima; the national center on violence against women in the black community) into their 501(c)(3) organizations. This included karma cottman leaving the role of executive director of dccadv to become the executive director of ujima. Dccadv deputy director, dawn dalton, moved into the dddadv executive director role in january 2021. The person center (tpc), a project of dccadv, provides culturally and linguistically competent services and resources to advance the physical and mental health needs and well-being of the district's approximately 161,000 african-born residents. Tpc has expanded services for survivors of domestic violence in the dc african immigrant (ai) community. Ujima, inc.: the national center on violance against women in the black community (ujima) is dccadv's response to addressing domestic violence in the black community. The mission of ujima is to mobilize the community to respond and end domestic violence against women in the black community. This mission is actualized through research, public awareness and community engagement, and resource development.\n\nTrainings and technical assistance: the coalition's professional training programs are trauma-informed, survivor-centered, culturally responsive, and address accessible service provision. This includes our semiannual domestic violence advocate core competency training (dvact), held this fiscal year in november 2020 and june 2021, our 40-hour training that covers topics including the dynamics of domestic violence, trauma resulting from domestic violence, crisis intervention, personal safety, risk management, criminal and civil court processes, and resources available to victims and survivors. The course also offers in-depth information on additional topics including types of violence, cultural humility, working with lgbtq+ survivors, the intersections of domestic violence and housing insecurity, and more. Additionally, this fundamental training meets the statutorily-defined requirement that provides advocate privilegewhen advocates are working with survivors of domestic violence they must keep confidential all information about their client interactions and do not have to release information to the courts, police or others requesting this information. We offered the training in both spanish and english using simultaneous interpretation on zoom and translated slides and supplementary materials into spanish for increased language accessibility. Responses to this training were universally positive. On average, participants gave the training 4.7 out of 5 stars. Comparing the pre-training surveys to the post-training evaluations, all participants gained substantial knowledge in target areas. Our advanced trainings this year included: the three tenets of trauma-informed care: an intro and skills building workshop. The training welcomed participants who learned about three tenets of trauma-informed care for survivors of domestic violence: a person-centered approach, confidentiality, and choice. Participants were able to build practical skills for trauma-informed work through group activities, discussion, and journaling exercises. We offered the training in both spanish and asl using simultaneous interpretation on zoom and translated the slides into both spanish and english for increased language accessibility. A two-part service an ethical approach to mandatory child abuse reporting facilitated by alicia aiken of the confidentiality institute at the danu center for strategic advocacy. O in part 1 participants learned about the history of child abuse interventions, federal confidentiality rules for dv survivors, and dc-specific laws around mandatory reporting. The training also explored ethical considerations around intersecting issues in domestic violence service provision. The training was presented primarily in spoken and written english, with simultaneous spanish and asl interpretation available. O part 2 focused on best practices for communicating with survivors about mandatory reporting, strategies for assessing whether a disclosure or event rises to the level of a mandatory report, and techniques for handling a mandatory report in a trauma-informed manner that respects survivor autonomy. Participants also shared ideas and strategies for systemic advocacy in the dc community to foster the well-being of survivors and minimize harm when they interact with the child welfare system. The training was presented primarily in spoken and written english, with simultaneous spanish and asl interpretation available. The fourth advanced training addressed serving male survivors of domestic violence. The focus of this training included: o federal laws and policies relating to services for male survivors; o local norms and policies in service provision; and o an individual survivor and his experiences as a male survivor seeking services in dc. O the training also included an extensive q&a session with participants. The training was presented primarily in spoken and written english, with simultaneous spanish and asl interpretation available. Additionally, our training and outreach specialist facilitated a twelve-hour training series for the muslim community center of silver spring's domestic violence ambassadors in partnership with the person centerwho serves the african immigrant communityon domestic violence 101, trauma and trauma-informed care, domestic violence laws, crisis intervention, safety-planning, and domestic violence resources. Lastly, the coalition facilitated a domestic violence for health care providers training for individuals at george washington university physical therapy program. In this training, participants learned about the definitions and dynamics of domestic violence, how to identify patients who may be experiencing domestic violence, and best practices for serving dv survivors in health care settings. Students also learned about how to select trauma informed and inclusive dv screening tools and how to field disclosures of violence in both personal and professional settings.\n\nCommunity education and public awareness: dccadv worked diligently to ensure communication was reaching individuals and organizations, sending regular updates to member programs with any new guidance, resources, and pertinent information to assist with the growing number of survivors coming into member programs. We held regular virtual membership meetings, did individual check-ins, and worked to ascertain the needs of our member programs. The coalition facilitated a briefing for the dc council, mayor's administration, and local private funders on the impact of domestic violence on survivors who had been isolated with their partners and heightened violence they were reporting, leading to increased service needs.","year":2020,"name":"DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC The mission of the ujima is to mobilize the community to respond and end domestic violence against women in the black community. When the mayor of dc shifted the district's operations to telework and closed the schools, due to the covid-19 pandemic, many other businesses and nonprofits followed suite. The impact of covid-19 made the lifesaving supports available to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence more difficult to access. In response, dccadv worked to ensure that our member programs had access to constantly changing information and guidance, as well as available resources for their client's safey and their organizational health. Our committment to our 16 member organizations during the unprecedented covid-19 global pandemic did not falter, and we continue to work diligently to provide ongoing support to our member organizations, which in turn enhances their ability to continue to deliver vital services to the community. During the covid-19 pandemic, we continued to support our member and partner programs in several way, including providing assistance in gaining access to funding and infrastructure support, policy support, and ensuring their continued connectivity to vital resources.\n\nTrainings and technical assistance: the training department of dccadv facilitated several trainings for community partners and ally organizations, including trainings for the office of the attorney general - dv and the role of physical therapy professionals for gwu's physical therapy program; domestic violence 101's for the us secret service, afge local 1403, and fedcap, inc.; self-care for service providers for the montgomery county family justice services center; two trainings on domestic violence and handling reports from survivors for the dc housing authority; two trainings to non-profit community partners on supporting survivors and screening for domestic violence (kra and mary's center); and one training for federal agencies on domestic violence 101 (the us merit systems protection board offices in dc, chicago, and detroit). In post-training evaluations across all trainings, participants rated the trainings as either \"extremely valuable or \"very valuable.\" participants also commented that the trainings were \"helpful and informative, and the training coordinator at one agency commented that dccadv's training was the best domestic violence training she had seen in her 11 years of coordinating a yearly domestic violence training for her staff members. We facilitated our domestic violence advocate core competency training for a total of 50 participants in august and november. In the dvact overall evaluation, 90% of participants rated the training as \"extremely valuable or \"very valuable.\" the remaining 10% rated the training as \"somewhat valuable.\" 85% of respondents stated that dvact had \"a great deal\" of relevance to their work and 95% of respondents agreed that they had learned new skills during dvact. 100% of respondents said that they would be \"very likely or likely\" to recommend dvact to someone else. Lastly, we implemented our 2020 advanced training series: nothing about use, without us. This series focused on centering the voices of culturally specific service providers and discussing best practices for serving non english proficient and limited english proficient survivors, immigrant survivors, and survivors of color. The at's were faciliated by member programs dawn, the person center, and la clinica del pueblo. Throughout the year, the dc coalition against domesitc violence remained committed to our estblished goals and objectives and successfullymet all expected activities.\n\nCommunity education and public awareness: dccadv worked diligently to ensure communication was reaching individuals and organizations, sending daily updates to member programs compiling all the new guidance, resources, and pertinent information for seamless continuation of their operations. We updated our webpage with information and changes in dv service provision, offering a resource hub for the constantly changing response. Staff developed faq's for survivors on court operations, economic resources, resources for seniors, and housing services. We held regular virtual membership meetings, did individual check-ins, and sent weekly emails to listservs to keep information flowing to service providers. The coalition facilitated a virtual briefing for the dc council and mayor's administration on the realities that survivors of domestic violence were facing while being isolated with their abusive partner, and the needs that domestic violence programs had to get services to them, including budget and policy needs. The pandemic may have changed how we operated, but it did not change our dedication to survivors in the district.","year":2019,"name":"DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC From october 1, 2021 thru september 30, 2022, the dc coalition against domestic violence (dccadv, the coalition) focused our efforts around the three major gaps survivors of domestic violence and the advocates who serve them continue to experience: access to safe and stable housing, culturally specific services, and domestic violence prevention and education. Dccadv highlights and accomplishments: in effort of furthering our commitment to centering the voices of survivors of domestic violence, this year we launched a survivor advisory board (sab). The board is made up of 12 dedicated survivors who meet monthly and are compensated for their participation. The sab helps to ensure that dccdadv's policy work, educational materials and prevention work centers survivors and includes a trauma-informed approach. Additionally, we ensure that our board members have access and tools to testify before the dc council, speak to lawmakers, and at their choosing share their stories at events. In partnership with our 18-member programs we created and launched our true cost of survivor safety campaign. The true cost campaign aims to spread awareness about the lack of funding and resources domestic violence service providers have access to, as well as the support needed from the dc government and other funding sources in order to meaningfully support domestic violence prevention and intervention services in the district. This is an ongoing campaign that we hope to grow and allow to evolve to help communicate funding needs and gaps. In response to identified needs of our member programs, we launched an executive director (ed) diversity, equity , inclusion & belonging (deib) cohort project in november 2021. Beginning in may 2022, the coalition staff began a similar process with the same facilitators. These six-month engagements include training, homework in between sessions, opportunities for cultural affinity groups, and role playing to practice interrupting acts of oppression. We will build and expand these efforts in years to come in our efforts of addressing the history of intersecting oppressions in this country. A membership steering committee was developed this year and is made up of executive directors from the five service areas within the domestic violence service community - legal services, counseling/case management services, youth services, culturally specific services, and housing. The committee is charged with developing recommendations to the full membership regarding infrastructure processes and practices that provide clarity on coalition staff roles and membership roles, as well as examining the member application process to ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are integrated in the operations of applying members. The committee meets monthly, reporting out to the full membership at the bi-monthly membership meeting. The group infuses information gathered from the membership into the infrastructures that are being developed. The group infuses information gathered from the membership into the infrastructures that are being developed.\n\nThe dc coalition against domestic violence (dccadv) is the federally-recognized statewide coalition of domestic violence programs, organizations, and individuals organized to ensure the elimination of domestic violence in the district of columbia. Our work applies a framework for identifying social, economic, cultural, political, and legal factors that have critical implications for those affected by violence, oppression, subordination, and discrimination. We leverage our expertise to expand community activism, deepen community awareness surrounding poverty caused by domestic violence, and address systems gaps by promoting sound and effective public policy initiatives.\n\nTrainings and technical assistance: the coalition's professional training programs are trauma-informed, survivor-centered, culturally responsive, and address accessible service provision. This includes our semiannual domestic violence advocate core competency training (dvact), held this fiscal year in november 2021 and june 2022 for a total of 103 advocates. Our 40-hour training covers topics including the dynamics of domestic violence, trauma resulting from domestic violence, crisis intervention, personal safety, risk management, criminal and civil court processes, and resources available to victims and survivors. The course also offers in-depth information on additional topics including types of violence, cultural humility, working with lgbtq+ survivors and survivors who are deaf, the intersections of domestic violence and housing insecurity, and more. Additionally, this fundamental training meets the statutorily-defined requirement that provides advocate privilege - when advocates are working with survivors of domestic violence they must keep confidential all information about their client interactions and do not have to release information to the courts, police or others requesting this information. We offered the training in both spanish and english using simultaneous interpretation on zoom and translated slides and supplementary materials into spanish for increased language accessibility. We also provide asl interpretation. Responses to this training were universally positive. On average, participants gave the training 4.8 out of 5 stars. Comparing the pre-training surveys to the post-training evaluations, all participants gained substantial knowledge in target areas. Our three-hour advanced trainings, or professional development opportunities, for domestic violence advocates this year included: - addressing technology-based abuse - working with survivors who were formerly incarcerated - elder justice and mandated reporting - accessing the employment rights of domestic violence survivors, and - responding to requests for records additional community education trainings included: - understanding domestic violence for dc homeless service providers. The training discussed the dynamics of domestic violence, its intersections with homelessness, and dv specific resources to assist staff in supporting seamless referrals for survivors of domestic violence. This training was provided to a total of 65 staff persons, including case managers, residential, and outreach staff. - domestic violence 101 and serving lgbtq and male survivors for the us park police. Officers in training learned about the prevalence of domestic violence, how to identify both physical and non-violence physical abuse in a relationship, and how to support survivors of domestic violence. Participants also learned about best practices for serving lgbtq and male-identifying survivors. - domestic violence 101 for the smithsonian institute. Participants learned about the prevalence of domestic violence, how to identify both physical and non-violence physical abuse in a relationship, and how to support survivors of domestic violence. This year coalition staff launched monthly advocate virtual meetings, one-hour community building opportunities for client-service advocates from across multiple service areas working with survivors, to come together and share knowledge and needs. Topics for recent meetings included the impact of the dobbs decison and survivors' access to reproductive health care in washington, dc; community engagement and how to write opinion pieces that share advocates expertise about domestic violence in washington, dc; and the intersections between domestic violence and sex work. Additionally, dccadv worked with dc's office of the attorney general's cure the streets program to develop a domestic violence 101 training for violence interrupters (vis) working at the intersection of gun violence, domestic violence, and community safety in the district. Developed from listening sessions with vis and credible messengers, dccadv designed a three-day training focused on what domestic violence is and how it might show up in the work of vis, best practices when engaging with survivors of domestic violence including confidentiality and safety planning, and dc laws and protections available to survivors. The goal of this training is to help vis identify when domestic violence might be present in conflicts they are helping residents navigate and offer connections to local resources. We piloted the training in september for fourteen participants, a mixture of vis, outreach workers, case managers, and counselors. Lastly, coalition staff provided technical assistance through 153 contacts with member programs, ally organizations, government representatives, and calls with survivors.\n\nCommunity education and public awareness dccadv worked diligently to ensure communication was reaching individuals and organizations, sending regular updates to member programs with any new guidance, resources, and pertinent information to assist with the growing number of survivors coming into member programs, the coalition revamped our website to make it easier to navigate as it serves as a clearing house of local resources, as well as was updated to hold online training modules. In efforts to highlight the different awareness months centering on survivors, the coalition dedicated our social media platforms to domestic violence awareness month in october, stalking awareness month in january and highlighted teen dating violence awareness month in february. Additionally, we provided social media outreach for issues that impact survivors of domestic violence (gun violence, sex trafficking, homelessness, abortion, etc.) and in december 2021, in partnership with beekeeper group dccadv launched a domestic violence public awareness campaign that ran on wmata buses for 3 months. Community engagements included a meeting with a foreign judicial delegation from kyrgyzstan to discuss the benefits of coalitions and direct service organizations along with specific legal processes and remedies available in dc and the us. The delegation voiced several concerns which are similar to concerns often voiced by us judges. Additionally, coalition staff regularly updated our website to publish articles, link to reports, update training opportunities, and edit resources available in dc. Lastly, the coalition facilitated a dv101 workshop for children's national medical center's first annual conference on family violence. This training was attended by 62 in person healthcare providers and advocates, plus 82 virtual attendees. The training content provided an overview of domestic violence, unique dynamics of domestic violence, and how trauma may manifest in survivors. A discussion about trauma-informed approaches to screening and services was provided as well as domestic violence resources in the district.","year":2021,"name":"DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COALITION AGAINST Our work applies a framework for identifying social, economic, cultural, political, and legal factors that have critical implications for those affected by violence, oppression, subordination, and discrimination. We leverage our expertise to expand community activism, deepen community awareness surrounding the numerous ways domestic violence impacts survivors and address system gaps by promoting sound and effective public policy initiatives.\n\nTrainings and technical assistance: the coalition's professional training programs are trauma-informed, survivor-centered, culturally responsive, and center accessible service provision. Our semiannual domestic violence advocate core competency training (dvact), held in june and november each year, grounds new advocates in these guiding principles. Dvact is a 40 hour interactive training that covers topics including the dynamics of domestic violence, trauma informed care, crisis intervention, personal safety, risk management, criminal and civil court processes, and resources available to victims and survivors. The course also offers in-depth information on intersecting issues such as homelessness, cultural humility, working with lgbtq+ survivors, and survivors who are deaf. This fundamental training is one of the three key components for advocates to obtain advocate privilegea statute in dc that ensures all advocate and survivor conversations are privileged and confidential. All workshops are facilitated in american sign language, spanish, and english using simultaneous interpretation. Responses to the training were universally positive and post-training evaluations showed substantial knowledge gained in target areas. Our three-hour advanced trainings, or professional development opportunities, for domestic violence advocates this year included workshops on supporting male survivors through voluntary services, economic justice, trauma informed supervision and organizational health, and financial abuse within teen dating violence. The coalition also convened monthly advocate calls which are one-hour community building opportunities for client-serving advocates from across the multiple service areas working with survivors, to come together and share knowledge and needs. Dccadv facilitated community education trainings in 2023, covering trauma informed care; crime victims compensation program; the recently passed legislationthe expanded supports bill; as well as legal protections for survivors of domestic violence accessing civil and criminal courts.\n\nCommunity education and public awareness: the dc coalition works to engage district residents in the movement to end domestic violence. We communicate through regular updates to our website and social media platforms, highlighting issues that impact survivors of domestic violence including gun violence, sex trafficking, homelessness, access to safe abortion, legislation, and other pertinent topics. Our website also serves as a clearinghouse of local resources and information, including online training modules. Our social media platforms highlight the different awareness months such as domestic violence awareness month (dvam) in october, stalking awareness month in january, and teen dating violence awareness month in february. For dvam we returned to in person events for paint the town purple, chalking about healthy relationships at thirteen metro stops around the city and sharing information with community members. We also participated in dvam tabling events at local small businesses for purple thursday, raising awareness about services available to survivors. In 2023, dccadv engaged with community members through other outreach events including panel presentations for the dc women's bureau, us department of labor, penn state university gender equity group, camp tel yehudah, harriet's dream, and so others may eat, as well as tabling at children's national medical center's regional academy on family violence.","year":2022,"name":"DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
