This year we had three staff educators, one summer intern, and three trained volunteers delivering our program locally and the nursing educators delivered the professional programming. Cmpf provided 151 days of educational programming that included 78 days in schools (52%), 50 days of community events (33%) and 23 days providing professional programming (15%). Programs were delivered to over 80,000 children and adults in classrooms, sailing centers, recreational facilities, and at professional conferences locally in massachusetts and nationally in washington d.c., concord, nc. And orlando, fl. Cmpf partnered with the blue hill community health alliance #20 to launch a \"watch your back\" campaign in conjunction with the public health nurses. The dermatology nurses'association and the montana division of cancer control provide our sunaware national curriculum for implementation by their organizations. Cmpf reached over one million people with their don't fry day campaign, a national day of skin cancer awareness, procuring a proclamation from governor baker and a digital billboard placement on the south shore, as well as providing community programs. In may, for melanoma awareness month, board member and pediatrician, dr. Jeremy warhaftig, facilitated a sunaware educational initiative for new parents at south shore medical center where his staff provided sun protection education, a program bookmark and a sun protection shirt for newborns. We are able to provide the sunaware program, free-of-charge, with the help of our board members who provide individual contributions, procure corporate donations, and donate their time at fundraising events. Educating professionals about sun protection and skin cancer prevention is another way that we promote our mission. Staff and board members provided this programming at nursing, medical, and legislative conferences. Ms. Flynn, sunaware educator and advocacy coordinator, lectured multiple times in washington dc and was instrumental in obtaining the 2017 don't fry day proclamation from governor baker in massachusetts and introduced legislation in massachusetts along with senator eldridge and o'connor to allow children to bring sun protection gear to school (sunucate bill). In addition, she participated in a congressional skin cancer-screening event on capital hill. CMPF taught a total of 143 days, in schools (54%), at community events (31%) and at professional symposia (15%) reaching over 100,000 children and adults. CMPF partnered with the MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation, the National Park Service and Boston Harbor Now, again this year to educate staff, tourists and visitors. Sunscreen stations were set up on Spectacle and George's Islands and free sunscreen products were distributed to thousands along with an educational bookmark. For the third year in a row, the National Council for Skin Cancer Prevention recognized CMPF as a winner of their Don't Fry Day (DFD) contest. This recognition was for our work in procuring a Proclamation from Governor Baker in recognition of this national day of skin cancer awareness, providing community and school events, our infant sun- proofing project, and reaching thousands of followers nationally with our DFD social media campaign. Erin Presutti, Assistant Executive Director, was a lead member of the DFD national task force. Educating professionals about sun protection and skin cancer prevention is another way that we promote our mission. Our staff, board members, and advisory council members provided programs at nursing, medical, and legislative conferences. Ms. Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, Executive Director, provided a webinar through the MA School Nurses Association and provided supervision for two doctoral nursing students on their skin cancer research. In addition, she traveled with Hadassah to Israel on their nursing mission to celebrate 100 years of service. In Israel, she visited with a clinical nurse specialist and visited Palestinian schools to see their health curriculum in action.","year":2018,"name":"SUN PROTECTION FOUNDATION INC","phone":"7818751773","website":"www.melanomaprevention.org","type":"990","principal_officer":"ME MAGUIRE-EISEN","year_formation":2003,"state_legal_domicile":"MA","total_volunteers":25,"tax_period_begin":"2018-07-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2019-06-30T00:00:00","address":"75 WASHINGTON STREET, NORWELL, MA, 02061, USA","city":"NORWELL","state":"MA","country":"USA","zip_code":"02061"},"Governance":{"501c3 determination":true,"Number of voting members":9,"Number of independent voting members":9,"Number of employees total":4,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":4,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":true,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":true,"Compensation process for other employees":true,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":false,"Consolidated audit financial statements":false,"Accountant compile or review":false,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":false,"Audit committee":false,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":false,"Fundraising activities":true,"Professional fundraising":false,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":184495,"Contributions":{"value":189883,"Other contributions":189883},"Program revenue":{"value":0},"Investment income":{"value":111,"Investment income total":111},"Other revenues":{"value":-5499,"Net income from fundraising events":-5499}},"Expenses":{"value":136287,"Grant expense":{"value":0},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":0},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0},"Salaries":{"value":59245,"Other salaries and wages":54270,"Payroll taxes":4975},"Other expenses":{"value":77042,"Accounting":10745,"Other services":11657,"Advertising":50,"Office expenses":5330,"Information technology":4698,"Occupancy":10086,"Travel":4127,"Conferences and meetings":500,"Depreciation and depletion":2135,"Insurance":3137,"Itemized Expenses":{"value":5334,"DUES AND SUBSCRIPTIONS":705,"PAYROLL PROCESSING FEES":997,"POSTAGE AND DELIVERY":1065,"PRINTING AND REPRODUCTION":2567},"All other expenses":19243},"Functional Expenses":{"Program Service Expenses":59874,"Management And General Expenses":58151,"Fundraising Expenses":18262}},"Assets":{"value":245501,"Non-interest bearing cash":208687,"Land, building, equipment":36814},"Liabilities":{"value":1209,"Accounts payable, accrued":1209},"Fund balance":{"value":244292,"Unrestricted net assets":244292},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"SunAWARE Education Our mission is to prevent skin cancer one child at a time through education and advocacy. To that end, we have taught over one million children and adults through our signature SunAWARE For Life Program, changed laws and saved lives. Given the Covid Pandemic school closings and event cancellations, CMPF has pivoted to revising curriculum, filming video lessons (k-2 and 9-12), and publishing a new edition of Wiseheart Saves the Dawn and filming a companion video. A Curriculum Committee comprised of science, technology, health and library science educators assisted in completely revising the SunAWARE K-12 curriculum. The curriculum was aligned with the CDC's National Health Standards and is cross-curricular, age appropriate, and builds on knowledge over time. This year the SunAWARE Program was delivered by classroom teachers utilizing our online resources. Teacher evaluations of the new SunAWARE lessons were praiseworthy, hailing the videos as \"eye opening, engaging, fabulous, packed with information, stimulating, and fun.\" The Wiseheart Saves the Dawn book was republished with exciting new illustrations and a companion video. The book, as well as all program resources, are available for free download. Educating professionals about sun protection and skin cancer prevention continues to be key in promoting our mission.
