With over 350 affiliates nationwide, big brothers big sisters continues to deliver quality services to families in need. The program has undergone evaluation by independent organizations such as public private ventures. Repeatedly, big brothers big sisters has raised the bar in standards for youth mentoring services. In 1975, big brothers of ulster county and big sisters of ulster county merged to form the organization we know today as big brothers big sisters of ulster county. The organization received its 501c3 status in december of 1977. Since then thousands of children have benefited from having an adult mentor in their life. The programs offered serve children from ages 4 up to the child's 18th birthday. Children are typically from a single parent home or are being raised by a relative due to parental abandonment, parental incarceration, parental abuse/neglect","primary_activities":"Community based mentoring:the agency served one hundred seventy three (173) children and 173 volunteers in 2010 through the community based model. Every child is matched in a one to one relationship with an adult volunteer. They spend a minimum of eight (8) hours a month engaging in activities they both enjoy. Mentors are asked to commit to at least one year in this relationship. The match relationship is monitored and supported regularly by a professional staff person. In 2010, 70% of the children served improved their relationships with adults, and 72% were less likely to resort to violence as a means of settling conflicts with peers. 68% of children had a better attitude towards school, and 73% improved their school performance. Overall, 80% of the children served improved their self confidence.\n\nSite based mentoring:the agency served almost twenty (20) children through the site based model. The children meet once a week for 90 minutes at a site in their neighborhood. In 2009 the sites were: the rondout recreation center and the community center at birchwood apts. The rondout recreation center is adjacent to two (2) low income housing projects. Springbrook and rondout gardens. Birchwood apts is also a low income housing project. Every child is matched with a mentor from suny new paltz. They engage in activites on site such as: homework assistance; board games, crafts, use of the playground; and any other activity they care to do. Professional staff are on site at all times.\n\nStatewide mentoring initiative:the third service that this agency provides is that we are the lead agency for two federally funded programs. Thirteen (13) big brothers big sisters agencies across new york state were sub-contractors under the mentoring children of prisoners grant from u s dept of health and human services. The second grant, mentoring children impacted by incarceration, was awarded in late 2009, by public private ventures who was awarded a grant through the u s dept of justice. Bbbs ulster was chosen as the lead agency for new york state. The programs offered serve children from ages 4 up to the child's 18th birthday. Every child is matched in a one to one relationship with an adult volunteer. They spend a minimum of eight (8) hours a month engaging in activities they both enjoy. The match relationship is monitored and supported regularly by a professional staff person.\n\nStatewide mentoring initiative:big brothers big sisters of ulster county was the lead agency for two federally funded programs. Thirteen (13) big brothers big sisters agencies across new york state were sub-grantees under the hhs mentoring children of prisoners grant from u s dept of health and human services, and the public private ventures grant through the U.S.. Dept of justice. Hundreds of children impacted by incarceration were served through these state-wide efforts.\n\nIn november 2011, following the elimination of federal funding for mentoring children of prisoners program, which represented the majority of operating funds for the agency, the board of directors of big brothers big sisters of ulster county voted to cease all operations and resigned from the board. The programs offered serve children from ages 4 up to the child's 18th birthday. Children are typically from a single parent home or are being raised by a relative due to parental abandonment, parental incarceration, parental abuse/neglect","primary_activities":"Community based mentoring:the agency served one hundred fifty (150) children in 2011 through the community based model. Every child is matched in a one to one relationship with an adult volunteer. They spend a minimum of eight (8) hours a month engaging in activities they both enjoy. The match relationship is monitored and supported regularly by a professional staff person.\n\nStatewide mentoring initiative:big brothers big sisters of ulster county was the lead agency for two federally funded programs. Thirteen (13) big brothers big sisters agencies across new york state were sub-grantees under the hhs mentoring children of prisoners grant from u s dept of health and human services, and the public private ventures grant through the U.S.. Dept of justice. Hundreds of children impacted by incarceration were served through these state-wide efforts.\n\nIn november 2011, following the elimination of federal funding for mentoring children of prisoners program, which represented the majority of operating funds for the agency, the board of directors of big brothers big sisters of ulster county voted to cease all operations and resigned from the board.
