writing, poetry, spoken word, public speaking, debate, yoga, painting, mixed media, piano, guitar, Spanish, choir, and Shakespeare programs at Lansing Correctional Facility. A total number of 525 inmates participated in these programs and another 600 inmates benefitted by attending performances. Performances sponsored by AiP inside of the facility included an East Hill Singers concert, two performances of Titus Andronicus and an original play penned by the members of the creative writing and spoken word class. Arts in Prison is grateful for the 70 active volunteers who support our programs. The East Hill Singers performed 6 concerts outside of the prison walls. Their 4 regular concerts were held in Overland Park, Mission, and Kansas City, Kansas. This choir is unable to perform across state lines in Missouri. Additionally the choir performed at an event honoring retired LCF warden, David McKune, and appeared at the Kansas International Film Festival for the premiere of the documentary film \"Conducting Hope\" which tells the story of the East Hill Singers and explores the programs impact on recidivism. These concerts reached an audience of 2,600 members of the public and involved 160 volunteers. Arts in Prison works in state prisons, federal facilities and county detention centers.","primary_activities":"During the fiscal year 2015 Arts in Prison (AIP) delivered program and arts experiences to 4,325 people. This is a tally of all program participants, plus audience members (inside and outside of the prison walls), as well as volunteers supporting these programs. There were 812 participants in AIP programs: 60 East Hill Singers choir members, 30 actors and technical people in the Living Shakespeare program, 75 members of the African American Awareness Organization. Additionally, Arts in Prison offers on-going programs in the following: visual art, poetry, yoga, meditation, textiles, debate, improvisation, philosophy, book club, step dance and The East Hill Singers perform at least four public concerts outside the prison walls each year and the Living Shakespeare program mounts a full production inside the facility each June to which supporters are invited. A writing and theatre program was started in 2014 in the Foundations program at Johnson County Juvenile Detention. The recidivism rate of participants in the East Hill Singers program was 18% compared to the State of Kansas average of 33%. In 2014 Arts in Prison served 3,952 people including program participants, audience members and volunteers. The public audience members and volunteers come from the five county Kansas City metropolitan area and are as diverse as those communities. Program participants hail from all areas of Kansas and surrounding states. Arts in Prison serves a diverse male population. The average age of an inmate at the Lansing Correctional facility is 38 years of age. The population is 58% white (including Hispanics), 39% African American and the remaining 3% are Asian and Native American. About half of the population has a high school diploma or has completed their GED. Most of the remaining have completed at least 11th grade. The prison population is actually locked away from the rest of the world. They are a truly under-served population without economic standing or access to the arts. The board of directors is diverse across many demographics. A new art class was also added at Lansing and our drama program staged our first ever dinner theatre event. We partner with the KDOC Mentoring for Success program to help offenders to be successful when they return to society. We focus in increasing confidence, teamwork, empathy and cognitive decision-making. The music program includes The East Hill Singers, a unique prison chorus located at Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing, KS. Founded in 1995, the chorus has grown in size and prominence to include up to 50 inmate singers. The unique aspect of the chorus is the addition of volunteer singers from the surrounding community who are also chorus members. Normally, the chorus is comprised of about 50% inmates and 50% volunteers. The chorus performs outside the prison walls in four public performances per year. Performances are held in various locations in the state of Kansas, most often churches, in the Kansas City area, Atchison, Topeka, Wichita, and Lawrence. Inmate singers are housed in East Unit, the minimum-security unit of the state prison at Lansing, KS. Some may have had musical experience in the past, but most have never sung before. The inmates learn vocal technique and a wide variety of choral literature, but they also gain important skills in collaboration - of being respectful of others' abilities and efforts, accepting responsibility to the group and making and honoring commitments to the group's goal. The volunteer singers serve as informal role models and mentors. The appreciation of the audience for a job well done is an experience most of the singers have never before had. It makes a life-long memory of a successful effort in working toward a goal of creating excellence and beauty, and being honored for that. In another area of the arts, Theodore \"Priest\" Hughes and Desmond \"337\" Jones teach the art of creative writing and spoken word. Penning their thoughts on important cultural topics and current events as well as exploring their pasts through stories and poems is a cathartic experience to inmates who have spent most of their lives behind prison walls. Giving life to their words with performance skills makes the lessons learned accessible not only to the authors but to others as well. This very popular program has brought the art of the Slam to the prison with teams and individuals competing. \"Found stories\" have also been strung together and enhanced by music to bring the experiences of incarceration to the stage. Communication arts, Board members Tom Smeed and Cathy Fisher lead the public speaking and debate classes. As a business owner, Tom relies on the power of words and the skills of closing a sale. Cathy is a former forensics coach who appreciates the value of making a strong argument with words. Good public speaking skills are required in all areas of life. Inmate participants learn how to express themselves verbally in an effective manner. They learn communication techniques that help them engage and hold other's attention. At one point in 2020 Lansing Correctional Facility (the primary site we serve) was the 13th largest COVID cluster in the country. Our volunteers were not allowed to enter the facility and our participants were left with few options for self-improvement, rehabilitation, and stress relief and mental health benefits. In the interim we provided 800 personal care packages to inmates being sent from other facilities to Lansing for quarantine and care. We offered a mail art project that asked artists to express COVID from their window. Our partners from the Kansas City Symphony created a video of individual artists performing. Since the Symphony could not come to the prison, this was a way for the inmates to engage anyway.
