brought more native representation through accurate stories in tv and film, the indian boarding school investigation and apology by president biden, increased funding for mmiw and public safety programs, and the impact of late president jimmy carter who enacted the indian child welfare act and the tribally controlled community college assistance act. within pwna's service area, remote tribal communities made advances too. even as inflation stacked on top of longstanding poverty, they made significant advances in emergency preparedness and its integral link to food security. both issues are top priorities for tribes across the country. in addition, while the 2024 news cycles focused heavily on climate-driven disasters, war, and politics, caring people here in the u.S. remembered native americans. this allowed us to bring immediate relief and support long-term solutions such as food security, higher education, and emergency preparedness planning and training. we know that none has increased by 101% from $167 in 2021 to $336 per truck in the first quarter of 2022. -the cost of shipping for inbound inventory has doubled since the pandemic began. -meanwhile, supplier deliveries can take 3 weeks longer, creating a need to anticipate, order and fund supplies in advance of tribal requests. -staff shortages continue to create challenges and new pressures for existing staff. pwna has been short one driver in each region for nearly two years. -reservation communities are still under shelter-in-place orders due to higher risk yet giving for covid relief has slowed. even pre-pandemic, giving for native causes was less than 1% of all charitable giving in the united states. one of the largest native-led charities, pwna creates high impact through a dual approach: addressing immediate needs in reservation communities by providing food, water, school supplies and other critical materials, and supporting community-led projects that sustainably address the core symptoms of poverty and contribute to self-sufficiency and social equity. we leverage asset-based community development (abcd) as a model to encompass materials, capacity building, community building, asset/resource development and higher education. this builds on assets present in the communities we serve and brings together individuals, programs, and outside resources to leverage the social capital of a much larger network mobilizing toward a common solution. the severities created by western colonization and the reservation system, broken treaty promises and racial marginalization have 8.7 percent and retail up 5.6 percent over 2021. this diminished purchasing power in every u.S. home. sadly, the underserved tribes in pwna's service area faced these same increases - although starting from a much poorer economic base. in addition, supply chain issues and inflation challenged pwna like other native nonprofits, leading to: - higher prices for the critical goods we deliver year-round - an unexpected $67,000 surcharge for outsourced shipping, such as emergency relief - 52% higher fuel cost for in-house deliveries (292 per truck, up from $192 in 2021) - slower deliveries dictating funding and stocking of supplies before tribal partner requests - difficulty keeping up with expenses and adequate staffing in every tribal community, grassroots leaders are making positive discovery' (the basis for taking native lands during the westward expansion). within pwna's service area, the tribes made advances too. even as they struggled with economics and health disparities, they exercised tribal sovereignty and self-determination, which is critical if tribes are to remain socially, culturally, and economically viable long-term. in addition, while 2023 news cycles focused heavily on disasters and war-torn countries, donors here in the u.S. kept some of their attention on the needs of indian country. this allowed us to bring immediate relief and support long-term building, and community investment. the severities created by colonization, the reservation system, broken treaty promises, and racial and systemic bias are not easily surmountable. however, 2024 brought more native representation through accurate stories in tv and film, the indian boarding school investigation and apology by president biden, increased funding for mmiw and public safety programs, and the impact of late president jimmy carter who enacted the indian child welfare act and the tribally controlled community college assistance act. within pwna's service area, remote tribal communities made advances too. even as inflation stacked on top of longstanding poverty, they made significant advances in emergency preparedness and its integral link to food security. both issues are top priorities for tribes across the country. in addition, while the 2024 news cycles focused heavily on climate-driven disasters, war, and politics, caring people here in the u.S. remembered native americans. this allowed us to bring immediate relief and support long-term solutions such as food security, higher education, and emergency preparedness planning and training. we know that none
