HelpAge has provided age-appropriate assistance and support to ensure the best possible recovery and rehabilitation. HelpAge USA is committed to a 2-3 year engagement in the aftermath of the earthquake, carrying on through the reconstruction phase. For the first six months, the focus was on meeting the emergency needs of older people and on building longer-term capacity and capability.The phase 1 response was divided into four key areas of work (outputs):1. Older people affected by the earthquake received emergency relief (food and non-food items) to enable survival with dignity.2. Older people affected by the earthquake received appropriate healthcare including mental health support.3. Older people living in care homes have an adequate standard of care in the emergency and recovery periods.4. The most vulnerable older people living at home or in temporary shelter/accommodation received home care and support.In addition to any required continuation of phase 1 activities, phase 2 will include:1. Further work with larger scale agencies and the UN cluster system to ensure older people's needs are fully recognized in the rehabilitation and reconstruction program.2. Cluster and government strategies for relief, recovery and disaster risk reduction (DRR) increasingly address and integrate older people;2. Humanitarian partners have stronger skills and knowledge to mainstream aging in programs and operations;3. The wider public and development community in North Kivu have greater awareness and evidence of the needs and capacities of, and best practice programming involving, older people.
