Ready for life.","primary_activities":"The summer program, modeled on the children's defense fund's freedom school, had 80 participants during the fiscal year and ran monday-friday for six weeks. In addition, the after school program ran on every day the minneapoplis public schools were in session, and involved 40 participants from grades 1 - 6, monday - friday from 1:30 - 6:00 p.m. The patchwork quilt (pq) scholars are involved in a rigorous formal reading, math, computer, homework help, cultural and life skills curriculum. The children are bused to and from the program and enjoy a hearty, healthy, lunch before beginning their academic work. Five junior volunteers, who had graduated from the sixth grade of the after-school program, assisted staff and other volunteers in working with the scholars and participated in their own friday night teen group. On fridays the after-school schedule changes and scholars choose from a variety of clubs, including knitting, science, computer, dance and drama. Field trips and arts experiences are also part of the scholars pq time.\n\nThe pq parent advocacy program works to increase the parents involvement in their children's schools. Individual and group sessions, as well as ongoing follow up, assure that parents develop the skills and confidence they need to advocate for their students, including participating in parent/school conferences.\n\nProgram, assisted staff and other volunteers in working with the scholars and participated in their own friday night teen group.
