Our work includes farm energy efficiency, rural solar energy, and exploration of additional sustainable energy technologies. We developed energy efficiency and solar energy education materials, workshops and online resources for farms to explore energy efficiency tactics and renewable energy options they can employ to conserve and more effectively use energy in their farming operations. Through statewide leadership and regional partnerships, we developed a Farm Energy Auditor Training program to build energy auditor capacity on energy matters specific to agriculture and encourage farmer application to USDA-NRCS energy management cost-share programs. Through research and development funding from the Minnesota Department of Commerce - Division of Energy Resources, we implemented an LED Lighting for Poultry pilot project to reduce on-farm electrical consumption for poultry producers. This project has drawn the attention of Minnesota utility companies as a way to help them satisfy their 1.5% energy conservation mandate under state law. Additionally, we conducted a dairy farm energy efficiency project through an Otto Bremer Foundation grant to help dairy farmers conserve energy, reduce production costs, and maintain profitability. In conjunction with the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs), a University of Minnesota Extension program, we provided technical assistance through funding from USDA-Rural Development on rural solar energy projects in Minnesota. We developed solar energy education materials, provided outreach to interested farmers and rural residents, and guidance on solar energy assessment and project implementation. Additionally, we conducted educational conferences for the public and professionals to exchange ideas around energy. We continue our leadership in the development of sustainable energy practices and technologies including distributed electrical generation, as well as the promotion of anaerobic digestion and combined heat and power technologies.\n\nLocal Food - The Local Foods Program is expanding our work on policies and projects to improve access to healthy local food in urban and rural communities. Our initiatives include Fruits of the City and the Garden Gleaning Project. Fruits of the City, a gleaning program which trains and organizes volunteers to harvest the fruit from homeowners' backyards and regional orchards to donate to area food shelves, and the development of community orchards. To date that program has harvested over 110,000 lbs. of fresh food for more than 31 community food shelves. The Garden Gleaning Project is a collaborative effort to connect gardeners to area food shelves and build a relationship where the gardeners are growing foods that specifically address a food shelf's fresh food needs - culturally specific foods for which food shelf guests have difficulty accessing. The project published a toolkit designed to assist growers and food shelves in implementing a garden produce donation program.\n\nAgriculture - The Minnesota Project works to ensure that fair farm systems reward family and locally owned farms for growing diverse crops while protecting soil and water resources. This is accomplished by bringing together diverse agriculture and environmental interests in order to bring about policy change that is shaped to reward farmers for farming in ways that conserve natural resources and protect the water supplies, allows for wildlife habitat, and produces healthy food. We work in collaboration with partner organizations to connect Immigrant and Minority farmers to buyers who will buy locally produced food. The Minnesota Project works with the demand side of local food, building strong markets for local food to put more money in the hands of farmers. The Minnesota Project is the only environmental non-profit in Minnesota that advances community based solutions at the intersection of energy, agriculture and food sustainability.","primary_activities":"Energy - The Minnesota Project works in partnership with numerous state, nonprofit and private organizations to educate and influence policy for efficient and sustainable energy. The Minnesota Project continues to connect farmers to restaurants, chefs, institutions and distributors, while also educating and promoting the benefits of local food to the general public.","year":2012,"name":"MINNESOTA PROJECT INC","phone":"6516456159","website":"www.mnproject.com","type":"990","principal_officer":"David Glenn","year_formation":1979,"state_legal_domicile":"MN","total_volunteers":760,"tax_period_begin":"2012-01-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2012-12-31T00:00:00","address":"1885 University Ave Suite 315, Saint Paul, MN, 55104, USA","city":"Saint Paul","state":"MN","country":"USA","zip_code":"55104"},"Governance":{"501c3 determination":true,"Number of voting members":13,"Number of independent voting members":13,"Number of employees total":7,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":7,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":false,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":true,"Compensation process for other employees":true,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":false,"Consolidated audit financial statements":false,"Accountant compile or review":true,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":false,"Audit committee":true,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":false,"Fundraising activities":false,"Professional fundraising":false,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":395760,"Contributions":{"value":133970,"Other contributions":111596,"Fundraising revenue":0,"Dues":0,"Campaigns":22374,"Grant revenue":0,"Related organizations":0},"Program revenue":{"value":243777,"Total revenue":{"value":243430,"VARIOUS":243430},"Total other revenue":347,"Unrelated business revenue":0},"Investment income":{"value":9876,"Investment income total":9876,"Net investment gain":0,"Income from invest bond proceeds":0},"Other revenues":{"value":8137,"Other total":8137,"Royalties revenue":0,"Net rental income":0,"Net income from fundraising events":0,"Net income from gaming":0,"Net income":0}},"Expenses":{"value":481351,"Grant expense":{"value":0,"Grants to domestic orgs":0,"Grants to domestic individuals":0,"Foreign grants":0},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":0,"Fundraising professional":0},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0,"Benefits paid to members Total":0},"Salaries":{"value":258244,"Current officers":79788,"Disqualified persons":0,"Other salaries and wages":139511,"Pension plan contributions":0,"Other employee benefits":20811,"Payroll taxes":18134},"Other expenses":{"value":223107,"Management services":0,"Legal":0,"Accounting":2160,"Lobbying services":0,"Investment management fees":0,"Other services":109794,"Advertising":450,"Office expenses":10672,"Information technology":3958,"Royalties":0,"Occupancy":31423,"Travel":7164,"Conferences and meetings":2161,"Interest":0,"Payments to affiliates":800,"Depreciation and depletion":0,"Insurance":4678,"Travel entertainment public officials":0,"Itemized Expenses":{"value":49545,"VARIOUS":49545},"All other expenses":302}},"Assets":{"value":45076,"Non-interest bearing cash":3783,"Savings and temp cash investments":0,"Pledges and grants receivable":0,"Accounts receivable":41293,"Receivables from officers":0,"Receivables from disqual persons":0,"Other net note and loans":0,"Inventories for sale or use":0,"Prepaid expenses deferred charges":0,"Land, building, equipment":0,"Investments publicly traded":0,"Investments other":0,"Investments program related":0,"Intangible assets":0,"Other assets":0},"Liabilities":{"value":14290,"Accounts payable, accrued":10566,"Grants payable":0,"Deferred, revenue":0,"Tax exempt bond liabilities":0,"Escrow account liability":0,"Loans from officers, directors":0,"Secured mortgages and notes payable":0,"Unsecured notes loans payable":0,"Other liabilities":3724},"Fund balance":{"value":30786},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"Energy -
