Am community credit union provides appointment scheduling, computers and network/internet services and space for volunteers to use in addition to marketing support through the tax season starting in february and ending just before april 15th deadline. Am community credit union also offers individuals the opportunity to open an account to facilitate direct deposit filing of refunds without fee for those who may not have any access to financial services and meet amccu's eligibility requirements. During the 2010 tax season, our location assisted 385 individuals - an increase from the previous year. 260 returns were filed electronically from our location. 1,400 in total were helped through aarp / tax aide programs in kenosha county.\n\nSchool in a credit union:am community credit union provided financial literacy seminars and classroom presentations to over 250 area high school students in 2010 focusing on the basics of budgeting, checkbook management and the wise use of credit. Amccu also participated in 6 reality check day events held at two area high schools. Students participate in a budgeting exercise that includes: salary, life status, credit rating and established credit assignments and then navigate tables representing monthly obligations for daycare, housing, transportation, grocery, insurance, utilities, entertainment and fate situations. Student gain experience in keeping a checkbook, balancing income to expenses, and learn how to handle the consequences of choices they make during the exercise. Amccu's provides practice checkbook packets for two high schools and aids in the development and planning for events held at indian trail high school and academy besides volunteering time to work at each event. It is estimated conservatively that over 750 students take part in the reality check day exercise throughout the school year.amccu also operates a school branch at indian trail academy that is run under credit union supervision by paid student interns from the business and communication houses. Student interns learn about applying for and keeping a job, work responsibilities within different areas of the credit union. Students gain practical work experience and classroom credit. In 2010 am community credit union awarded three, $500 scholarships to area high school students who are continuing their higher education at local area colleges and universities. Students must be a member or the dependant of a member of amccu. The administration of the scholarship is handled by the education foundation of kenosha. In addition to the student scholarships, amccu sponsored one area high school teacher to attend the national institute of financial and economic literacy for full credit (current investment is $600 per teacher). The institute provides training and networking opportunities for teachers, access to numerous free materials and proven curricula, lesson plans that fit wisconsin and national standards.\n\nTax increment district - city of kenosha housing rehabilitation loan program:am community credit union continues its partnership with the city of kenosha, to make affordable housing rehabilitation loans to homeowner occupants who live within targeted lending areas identified by the city of kenosha, wisconsin for exterior and interior code-related repairs up to $20,000 loan maximum. Amccu assists homeowners through the loan and contractor process. Amccu holds open house events to inform homeowners in targeted areas about the funds available through the program. Amccu also reviews the homeowner's entire financial picture and may offer additional credit union loans and services if feasible to improve their financial outlook. In 2010, amccu helped 32 homeowners in the targeted area obtain $595,424.03 in affordable home improvement loans through the partnership with the city of kenosha.\n\nHousing and economic loan program (help loans):in 2010, am community credit union continues to partner with the city of kenosha common council to administer loans through the city of kenosha's housing and economic loan program (h.e.l.p.) to assist homeowners in making desired home improvements. The common council established a $450,000 fund for the program in 2009, with applicants eligible for a maximum loan of $7,500. Eligible applicants must be city residents that own and live in the home for which they are applying. During an open enrollment period interested homeowners were encouraged to apply. Applicants that enrolled were then ranked according to city priorities from emergency repairs affecting health and safety, code-related repairs, to neither of the previous.
