organization was officially incorporated in 1981, the history was born in the disability rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. kcil changed its name in 1996 to disability resource center of southwest michigan to better reflect the geographic area we served (at that time, nine counties) and the nature of our services. in october 2007 the organization updated their name to disability network southwest michigan as part of a move all 15 centers for independent living around michigan are making to have one unified name and logo to further the organization's ability to be successful
