We do this by raising dollars that fund more than 50 local programs operated by 35 non-profit agencies or organizations. We also collaborate with local businesses, organizations, health and social service agencies, and residents to identify and address emerging needs and issues. In 2004, the board of united way of greater battle creek began discussing the idea of community impact. They had previously embraced the united way systems mission of mobilizing the caring power of communities and had recently been told about the national and regional movement around making lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of problems.a conversation between united way worldwide president & ceo, brian gallagher and jim collins, the author of good to great, brought the realization that for a long time, the core business of united ways, in general, was about mobilizing others to solve community problems. The two made a call to the network to get back to the roots of united way with fundraising as a means and not an end. When board members were asked why they had joined the united way board in the first place, all had responded with some version of the following: \"i want to solve problems\"; \"i want to bring people together to make a difference\"; \"i want to make this community a better place to live and work.\" not one volunteer had responded that they had joined the united way to raise and distribute money. It was a major epiphany for all involved. A new vision for the organization began to emerge.over the course of the next few years, the strongly committed board and staff leadership moved to put some foundational pieces in place. They knew they needed to reposition united way in the community as an active listener and made a foray into community engagement by participating in dialogues across a broad spectrum to uncover what issues were most important to people. They began to make sure that the work they supported was outcome-focused and not merely counting units of service.collaborationunited way of greater battle creek realized they could not make change real by themselves so they began collaborating with more community organizations and groups and found themselves at many community tables. United ways involvement in the community continued to grow and along with it came the resources to be able to invest more in various human service programs in the community.advancing the common goodin 2007, united way worldwide (uww) introduced the idea of advancing the common good by focusing on the building blocks for a good quality of life; a quality education that leads to a steady job, income to support a family and good health. In 2008, united way of greater battle creeks board voted unanimously to adopt advancing the common good as their new investment strategy, funding programs that can make a difference in the areas of education, income and health while continuing to provide a safety net for the communitys basic needs.education, income and health - using the newly released united way worldwide framework as a guide to help them, united way of greater battle creek set off to develop each of the three new pillars; education, income and health. Health - united way of greater battle creek started with health in the fall of 2008, by beginning to build the health investment pillar. Recognizing that the goal of building a foundation of a healthier life for all cannot be accomplished in isolation, united way sought assistance in the form of local physicians, leaders in the health care community, members of regional health alliance, and health care service providers. All were brought together to identify the most critical health-related needs and challenges for the people of this community. By the following summer, united way had put out a request for funding proposals (rfp) for agencies wishing to apply for funding under the new health pillar. In february, 2010, united way of greater battle creek announced its first 3-year investments under the advancing the common good model. Seventeen programs operated by 10 organizations were approved for funding. These programs were selected by the health investment team because they believed they best fit the comprehensive, focus-nature of the work that united way of greater battle creek intends to do and they can provide the evidence for community change being made through their program.education - by fall of 2009, united way of greater battle creek had convened another group of community volunteers that made up the education vision council. This group included educational leaders at various levels representing early childhood to college, community members with a vesting interest in the educational system, program service providers, as well as other community funders and community members. This group worked together tirelessly to identify the most critical education-related needs and challenges that appeared to be barriers to some children not achieving high school graduation.education mobilization - roughly around the same time, united way of greater battle creek was selected as one of 10 united ways around the country to participate in united way worldwides education mobilization work. This select group of united ways is part of a pilot-project to develop and implement an education plan to help increase high school graduation rates. Battle creek was selected, in large part, due to the strong collaborative work already being done in the community around creating greater educational opportunities for the communities youth. Among other things, being part of the mobilization group will help bring additional training resources and support to united ways education core team which is made up of united way of greater battle creeks entire leadership team along with three community volunteers. It then becomes the core teams responsibility to share this information and expertise with their board, staff, and community partners. The battle creek education core team also received training from the harwood institute, a leader in training individuals and organizations to think outwardly rather than inward. One way this happens is by sparking community change through the engagement of community members in authentic conversations. Community conversations - after receiving the necessary training on conducting community conversations, united way of greater battle creek set-out to engage various groups of individuals in these very intense, personal conversations about how they feel about education. Through the community conversations, united way of greater battle creek listens to community members to find out what their hopes and aspirations are for the education system in greater battle creek. The information will then be organized into common themes and shared with community partners to determine the best plan of action to make the aspirations a reality. Community engagement - the next chapter of this story is for united way of greater battle creek to get to know more about members of the community including: donors, volunteers and other community members so that they can better engage them in the area of work that most interest them.by building stronger relationships united way of greater battle creek can continue to be a catalyst to making the battle creek area the best possible place to live and work by affording everyone the opportunities necessary for a good quality of life.when you give, advocate, volunteer you live united!\n\nCommunity initiativesuwgbc does more than fund programs. It also helps identify critical community needs and works to help meet those needs. Sometimes uwgbc joins a community effort to address an issue, and sometimes we take a leadership role in solving the problem. In 2009-2010, uwgbc provided leadership in the following areas.connecting people to the help they need uwgbc partnered with the handson battle creek to fund the 211 call center, which connects residents with vital services. More than 39,600 requests for service were logged by the 211 call center in 2008. The data provided by the 211 call center is instrumental in identifying and (continued from page 3)addressing specific areas of need as well as helping to provide a greater understanding of where gaps and barriers may exist in services provided, and creating a focus on emerging access challenges (ie. Limitations in capacity, reduction or loss of state and/or federal funding, barriers for accessibility, etc.).basic needsin 2008, united way initiated the development of a basic needs coalition that meets quarterly engaging community service providers, referral sources, representatives from area businesses and local funders to discuss the growing needs, capacities, challenges and collaborative strategies around community basic needs services. Uwgbc helped secure $800,000 in additional support for basic needs/emergency funding support. In the 2008-09 fiscal year uwgbc's board of directors budgeted an additional $300,000 for conversations with the coalition group led to leveraging additional community resources including $500,000 from kellogg company allowing, for increased access to basic needs services for the growing numbers of residents in need of assistance.","year":2010,"name":"UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK","phone":"2699629538","website":"WWW.UWGBC.ORG","type":"990","principal_officer":"CHRISTIPHER SARGENT","year_formation":1967,"state_legal_domicile":"MI","total_volunteers":200,"tax_period_begin":"2010-07-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2011-06-30T00:00:00","address":"34 WEST JACKSON STREET NO 4B, BATTLE CREEK, MI, 49017, USA","city":"BATTLE CREEK","state":"MI","country":"USA","zip_code":"49017"},"Governance":{"501c3 determination":true,"Number of voting members":27,"Number of independent voting members":27,"Number of employees total":14,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":14,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":false,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":true,"Compensation process for other employees":true,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":true,"Consolidated audit financial statements":false,"Accountant compile or review":false,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":true,"Audit committee":true,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":true,"Fundraising activities":true,"Professional fundraising":false,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":5934474,"Contributions":{"value":5688059,"Other contributions":5653221,"Campaigns":34838},"Program revenue":{"value":0,"Unrelated business revenue":0},"Investment income":{"value":94407,"Investment income total":105296,"Net investment gain":-10889},"Other revenues":{"value":152008,"Other total":1473,"Net rental income":-23795,"Net income from fundraising events":159586,"Net income from gaming":14744}},"Expenses":{"value":5991049,"Grant expense":{"value":4730632,"Grants to domestic orgs":4730632},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":0},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0},"Salaries":{"value":851610,"Current officers":256715,"Other salaries and wages":365623,"Pension plan contributions":64077,"Other employee benefits":165195},"Other expenses":{"value":408807,"Management services":60010,"Accounting":25625,"Investment management fees":16099,"Advertising":96067,"Office expenses":19995,"Occupancy":36583,"Travel":4367,"Conferences and meetings":16155,"Depreciation and depletion":26796,"Itemized Expenses":{"value":107110,"VARIOUS":107110}}},"Assets":{"value":6505950,"Non-interest bearing cash":85404,"Savings and temp cash investments":488200,"Pledges and grants receivable":1675819,"Prepaid expenses deferred charges":24829,"Land, building, equipment":561761,"Investments publicly traded":3669937},"Liabilities":{"value":1220502,"Accounts payable, accrued":129678,"Grants payable":1090824},"Fund balance":{"value":5285448},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK (UWGBC) ADDRESSES SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY'S MOST PRESSING PROBLEMS AND MEASURABLY IMPROVES THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS IN NEED. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THIS STORY IS FOR UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK TO GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY INCLUDING: DONORS, VOLUNTEERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS SO THAT THEY CAN BETTER ENGAGE THEM IN THE AREA OF WORK THAT MOST INTEREST THEM.BY BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK CAN CONTINUE TO BE A CATALYST TO MAKING THE BATTLE CREEK AREA THE BEST POSSIBLE PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK BY AFFORDING EVERYONE THE OPPORTUNITIES NECESSARY FOR A GOOD QUALITY OF LIFE.WHEN YOU GIVE, ADVOCATE, VOLUNTEER YOU LIVE UNITED!","expense":4063464,"grants":3747875},{"description":"COMMUNITY INITIATIVESUWGBC DOES MORE THAN FUND PROGRAMS. Our focus is on education, income and health the building blocks for a good quality of life.the common good builds on the premise that we all have a stake in creating a healthy, prosperous community and by improving conditions for even one has an effect on us all.under this strategic model programs are funded in three priority areas: education (helping children and youth achieve their potential), income (helping families become financially independent) and health (improving peoples health through increased access to health care and basic needs). United way also serves as a community catalyst and convener, recruiting people and organizations that bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. Together, through collaboration with community partners, united way of greater battle creek is making lasting change. Collaborationunited way of greater battle creek realized it could not make change real by itself so it began collaborating with more community organizations and groups and found itself at many community tables, serving in a variety of capacities.building blocks to a good quality of life: education, income and healthinfluence the condition of all community impact fundthrough the generous, undesignated gifts from donors united way invests in essential services and also supports comprehensive and innovative approaches that address the underlying causes of problems. Utilizing public knowledge, combined with expert knowledge, united way of greater battle creek has brought together volunteers to help develop each of the investment pillars. Each pillar has a vision council made up of knowledgeable volunteers that determine the specific focus areas that would have the greatest impact in improving indicators with united way resources.request for funding proposals (rfp's) for agencies interested in applying for funding under health, education and income are released once a year, respectively, in three-year cycles. Investment teams for each pillar dedicate time to reviewing funding requests and determining which programs they believe best fit the comprehensive, focus-nature of the work that united way of greater battle creek intends to do and can provide the evidence for community change being made through their program. Recommendations are then made to the planning and investment committee and ultimately to the board of directors for final approval. Each level of the investment process is lead by community volunteers with support from united way staff.all funded programs are carefully monitored to ensure they meet stated goals and are improving the indicators on some of our community's most pressing issues.healthfocus areas:access to health carebasic health needshealthy lifestylesmaternal & infant healthfunding for programs approved under the health pillar began july 1, 2010.educationfocus areas:mentoring for families and childrenschool readinesssupport for adolescent developmentsuccess by third gradefunding for programs approved under the education pillar began july 1, 2011.education mobilizationin 2009, united way of greater battle creek was selected as one of 10 united way's around the country to participate in united way worldwide's education mobilization work. This select group of united way's is part of a pilot-project to develop and implement an education plan to help increase high school graduation rates. Battle creek was selected, in large part, due to the strong collaborative work already being done in the community around creating greater educational opportunities for the community's youth.among other things, being part of the mobilization group will help bring additional training resources and support to united ways education core team which is made up of united way of greater battle creek's entire leadership team along with three community volunteers. It then becomes the core team's responsibility to share this information and expertise with their board, staff, and community partners.the battle creek education core team also received training from the harwood institute, a leader in training individuals and organizations to think outwardly rather than inwardly. One way this happens is by sparking community change through the engagement of community members in authentic conversations. Turning outwardutilizing the framework of the harwood institute, united way of greater battle creek has been very intentional about turning outward, gathering input on what matters most from a deliberately diverse cross-section of the community through community conversations.through these conversations united way of greater battle creek listens to community members to find out what their hopes and aspirations are for greater battle creek. The information is then organized into common themes, called public knowledge, and shared with community partners to determine the best plan of action to mobilize the community to make the aspirations a reality. We are particularly pleased with the results of a collaborative pilot program developed after we implemented the transforming principles of turning outward, which produced amazing results, and for which we were recognized as one of seven education finalists in the 2012 united way worldwide's common good awards at community leaders conference. Verona elementary school had the worst kindergarten assessment in battle creek in 2011 - only 5% of verona kindergarteners were assessed as grade-proficient at the end of the year. At the end of the 2012 school year, 71% of verona kindergarteners were assessed to be proficient or better - a 1,320% improvement.incomethe income focus areas, to be created in 2011, will have a primary focus of helping families become financially independent. The request for funding proposals was released to agencies in fall 2011 with funding for approved programs beginning july 1, 2012.community engagementthrough community engagement united way of greater battle creek seeks to get to know more about members of the community including: donors, volunteers and other community members so that they can be engaged in the area(s) of work that most interest them.by building stronger relationships united way of greater battle creek can continue to be a catalyst to making the battle creek area the best possible place to live and work by affording everyone the opportunities necessary for a good quality of life.when you give, advocate, volunteer you live united!\n\nCommunity initiatives - united way plans and provides for various focus areas within the community. Volunteers and united way staff work to develop plans for funding and improvement of such initiatives. Most recently, because of the national financial downturn and local economic conditions, united way has intentionally targeted basic needs in the form of emergency assistance. United way supports the 211 call center, which reports monthly results of local information and referral contacts. Those and other reports identified several growing needs. United way has leveraged its funds and worked with other community partners to address those needs in the areas of food, shelter, and access to healthcare, resulting in approximately $350,000 and $290,000 of emergency assistance during the years ended june 30, 2011 and 2012, respectively.\n\nEffective july 1, 2012 the united way of greater battle creek merged with the greater kalamazoo united way.","year":2011,"name":"UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK","phone":"2699629538","website":"WWW.UWGBC.ORG","type":"990","principal_officer":"CHRISTIPHER SARGENT","year_formation":1967,"state_legal_domicile":"MI","total_volunteers":200,"tax_period_begin":"2011-07-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2012-06-30T00:00:00","address":"34 WEST JACKSON STREET NO 4B, BATTLE CREEK, MI, 49017, USA","city":"BATTLE CREEK","state":"MI","country":"USA","zip_code":"49017"},"Governance":{"501c3 determination":true,"Number of voting members":25,"Number of independent voting members":25,"Number of employees total":13,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":13,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":true,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":true,"Compensation process for other employees":true,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":false,"Consolidated audit financial statements":false,"Accountant compile or review":false,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":false,"Audit committee":true,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":true,"Fundraising activities":true,"Professional fundraising":false,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":5486213,"Contributions":{"value":5102332,"Other contributions":5020555,"Fundraising revenue":44500,"Campaigns":37277},"Program revenue":{"value":0,"Unrelated business revenue":0},"Investment income":{"value":122201,"Investment income total":107550,"Net investment gain":14651},"Other revenues":{"value":261680,"Other total":20826,"Net rental income":-24546,"Net income from fundraising events":162469,"Net income from gaming":102931}},"Expenses":{"value":10700102,"Grant expense":{"value":9293845,"Grants to domestic orgs":9293845},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":0},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0},"Salaries":{"value":935661,"Current officers":257275,"Other salaries and wages":501645,"Pension plan contributions":71607,"Other employee benefits":50784,"Payroll taxes":54350},"Other expenses":{"value":470596,"Management services":94241,"Accounting":27650,"Investment management fees":16343,"Advertising":103463,"Office expenses":44513,"Occupancy":36667,"Travel":4718,"Conferences and meetings":14649,"Depreciation and depletion":21665,"Itemized Expenses":{"value":104091,"VARIOUS":104091},"All other expenses":2596}},"Assets":{"value":0,"Non-interest bearing cash":0,"Savings and temp cash investments":0,"Pledges and grants receivable":0,"Accounts receivable":0,"Receivables from officers":0,"Receivables from disqual persons":0,"Other net note and loans":0,"Inventories for sale or use":0,"Prepaid expenses deferred charges":0,"Land, building, equipment":0,"Investments publicly traded":0,"Investments other":0,"Investments program related":0,"Intangible assets":0,"Other assets":0},"Liabilities":{"value":0,"Accounts payable, accrued":0,"Grants payable":0},"Fund balance":{"value":0},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"UNITED WAY OF GREATER BATTLE CREEK ADVANCES THE COMMON GOOD BY CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR A BETTER LIFE FOR ALL.
