These nationally managed programs, which include research and the national cancer information center (1-800-227-2345), directly benefit constituents of the filing organization as well as other affiliated organizations throughout the nation.\n\nMaking strides against breast cancer is an event that raises awareness for and fights back against breast cancer by: -helping people stay well by showing women steps they can take to reduce their breast cancer risk and make informed decisions about their health. We help women learn about healthy lifestyle choices and which screening tests, like mammograms, are right for them. -helping people get well by providing information, day-to-day help, and emotional support. Whether it's helping people make informed decisions about their care or connecting them with breast cancer survivors, we're here for them - so they can focus on feeling better. -finding cures through research to help find the causes of breast cancer and better ways to treat it so that more people can survive the disease. We have been an important part of nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history, including funding the development of tamoxifen and herceptin and using mammograms to screen for breast cancer. -fighting back against breast cancer by working with lawmakers to increase funding for breast cancer screening and treatment, and by bringing communities together through our making strides against breast cancer events to raise funds and awareness to fight the disease. Relay for life is an event that focuses support on survivors who have battled and are battling the disease and the caregivers that give their support to those fighting cancer. It honors those who have been lost to the disease to aid in healing and highlight the importance of defeating the disease. Finally, it helps fight back against the disease by participants making a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. This commitment involves doing something such as getting a screening test, quitting smoking or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against the disease.","year":2009,"name":"AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY INC GREAT LAKES","phone":"5173322222","website":"www.cancer.org","type":"990","principal_officer":"Nancy Caroline Yaw","year_formation":1946,"state_legal_domicile":"MI","total_volunteers":146904,"tax_period_begin":"2009-09-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2010-08-31T00:00:00","address":"1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI, 48823, USA","city":"East Lansing","state":"MI","country":"USA","zip_code":"48823"},"Governance":{"501c determination":true,"Number of voting members":20,"Number of independent voting members":20,"Number of employees total":423,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":423,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":false,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":true,"Compensation process for other employees":true,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":false,"Consolidated audit financial statements":true,"Accountant compile or review":false,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":true,"Audit committee":true,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":true,"Fundraising activities":true,"Professional fundraising":true,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":43380095,"Contributions":{"value":42927995,"Other contributions":14073570,"Fundraising revenue":28015808,"Campaigns":526607,"Grant revenue":312010},"Program revenue":{"value":35520,"Total revenue":35520},"Investment income":{"value":908871,"Investment income total":933390,"Net investment gain":-24519,"Income from invest bond proceeds":0},"Other revenues":{"value":-492291,"Other total":-882984,"Royalties revenue":0,"Net income from fundraising events":0,"Net income from gaming":262788,"Net income":127905}},"Expenses":{"value":47838610,"Grant expense":{"value":915387,"Grants to domestic orgs":31500,"Grants to domestic individuals":883887,"Foreign grants":0},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":172392,"Fundraising professional":172392},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0,"Benefits paid to members Total":0},"Salaries":{"value":21129154,"Current officers":768020,"Disqualified persons":327525,"Other salaries and wages":14421184,"Pension plan contributions":1820668,"Other employee benefits":2456356,"Payroll taxes":1335401},"Other expenses":{"value":25621677,"Management services":0,"Legal":47114,"Accounting":7000,"Lobbying services":0,"Investment management fees":0,"Other services":1395828,"Advertising":40977,"Office expenses":1785798,"Information technology":48762,"Royalties":0,"Occupancy":1621923,"Travel":716128,"Conferences and meetings":718257,"Interest":107725,"Payments to affiliates":16522085,"Depreciation and depletion":1331149,"Insurance":137521,"Travel entertainment public officials":0,"Itemized Expenses":{"value":1141410,"VARIOUS":1141410}}},"Assets":{"value":73520849,"Non-interest bearing cash":1150,"Savings and temp cash investments":13419087,"Pledges and grants receivable":718585,"Accounts receivable":32925,"Inventories for sale or use":47015,"Prepaid expenses deferred charges":499044,"Land, building, equipment":17637763,"Investments publicly traded":21537780,"Other assets":19627500},"Liabilities":{"value":30009161,"Accounts payable, accrued":4705199,"Deferred, revenue":290494,"Tax exempt bond liabilities":10025000,"Other liabilities":14988468},"Fund balance":{"value":43511688},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"PREVENTION PROGRAMS, DERIVED IN PART ON OUR CANCER RESEARCH, PROVIDE THE PUBLIC AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WITH INFORMATION AND EDUCATION TO PREVENT CANCER OCCURRENCE AND TO REDUCE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against the disease. Making strides against breast cancer is an event that raises awareness for and fights back against breast cancer by: - helping people stay well by showing women steps they can take to reduce their breast cancer risk and make informed decisions about their health. We help women learn about healthy lifestyle choices and which screening tests, like mammograms, are right for them. - helping people get well by providing information, day-to-day help, and emotional support. Once application is determined to be complete, applicants are notified of their award or denial. Once the applicants are notified of their award, they verify which school they will be attending. ACS processes checks made payable to the student and the University (For Example: Jane Doe/University of Learning). The checks are mailed to the student at which point they are required to be endorsed by both the student and the university. This ensures that funds are applied towards the student's account for tuition. If the student does not use all of the funds, the university forwards the remaining balance back to ACS. If the student transfers to another university and has funds available, the university forwards these funds back to ACS so that a new check can be issued to the student and the new university. Lost checks, if any, are verified that they have not been cashed and are voided. RELAY FOR LIFE AND MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - SEE SCHEDULE O.\n\nRelay for life is an event that focuses support on survivors who have battled and are battling the disease and the caregivers that give their support to those fighting cancer. Whether it's helping people make informed decisions about their care or connecting them with breast cancer survivors, we're here for them - so they can focus on feeling better. - finding cures through research to help find the causes of breast cancer and better ways to treat it so that more people can survive the disease. We have been an important part of nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history, including funding the development of tamoxifen and herceptin and using mammograms to screen for breast cancer. - fighting back against breast cancer by working with lawmakers to increase funding for breast cancer screening and treatment, and by bringing communities together through our making strides against breast cancer events to raise funds and awareness to fight the disease. -
