Scientist and public officials, who've determined the average time between great earthquakes is about 150 years, are planning the great southern california shakeout, a large emergency response exercise with broad public participation, to better understand the next big one. The california governor's office of homeland security has agreed to make it the emergency management's golden guardian exercise of 2008-9. Team safe-t partnered with the usgs to provide the educational component of the exercise, as well as provide informational and training materials to businesses, churches, and community groups in preparation for the event. Materials were translated into seven languages; distributed in hardcopy and made available through internet downloads. Team safe-t coordinated with unified school districts to increase and facilitate student and parent participation.
