infectious disease science center supports research aimed at finding new antibiotics, new treatments that use the body's own immune system instead of antibiotics, and methods for administering antibiotic medication to the body. These methods are especially important for third-world nations, where the numbers of infected people are high, but the resources for storing and distributing necessary treatments are scarce.","primary_activities":"Programs supported by aidsc are aimed at finding treatments and vaccines for hiv, finding new antibiotics, discovering new treatments that use the body's own immune system instead of antibiotics, and vaccines for a variety of infectious agents.one field of research supported by the center is hiv. Scientists are working on hiv projects to find treatments and vaccines. Another area of study is on interleukin-6, an important factor in both humoral and cell mediated immunity. These results have potential application for understanding how to elicit a powerful immune response against a wide variety of infectious agents, including development of a vaccine, for intranasal delivery, to protect against inhalation anthrax. Aidsc supports research on leishmania, a parasitic infection transmitted by sand flies. Two million new cases of the disease are reported worldwide each year. Visceral leishmaniasis, affecting the spleen, liver and bone marrow, can be fatal if untreated. Activities supported by the aidsc have directly benefited scientists, students, and the research community in nearly twenty countries throughout the world and in the united states. In the upcoming years, the center will continue to work towards its mission of combating infectious diseases worldwide. By supporting collaborative efforts amongst scientists working throughout the world, the center believes that vaccines and cures can and will be discovered.in addition to making the research results available to the general public, the center provides training opportunities for high school science students and teachers, undergraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows by providing seminars and summer job opportunities. The center is also a direct source of information to the public, answering phone calls from patients and their families regarding infectious diseases, and directing them to resources that can help them cope with and understand their specific disease. Scientists are available by phone or email to answer questions about their research.\n\nAids & infectious disease science center was terminated on june 30, 2012 and ceased all programs.","year":2011,"name":"AIDS & INFECTIOUS DISEASE SCIENCE CENTER","phone":"7723454800","website":"WWW.INFECTION-RESEARCH.ORG","type":"990","principal_officer":"RICHARD A HOUGHTON","year_formation":2000,"state_legal_domicile":"CA","total_volunteers":5,"tax_period_begin":"2011-07-01T00:00:00","tax_period_end":"2012-06-30T00:00:00","address":"11350 SW VILLAGE PARKWAY, PORT ST LUCIE, FL, 349872352, USA","city":"PORT ST LUCIE","state":"FL","country":"USA","zip_code":"349872352"},"Governance":{"501c3 determination":true,"Number of voting members":4,"Number of independent voting members":4,"Number of employees total":0,"Total Gross UBI":0,"Net unrelated business taxable income":0,"Number of employees":0,"Prohibited tax shelter transactions":false,"Taxable party notification":false,"Funds to pay premiums":false,"Premiums Paid":false,"Family or business relationship":false,"Delegation of management duties":false,"Conflict of interest policy":true,"Whistle blower policy":true,"Compensation process for CEO":false,"Compensation process for other employees":false,"Changes to organizing documents":false,"Material diversion or misuse":false,"Members or stockholders":false,"Election of board members":false,"Decisions subject to approval":false,"Minutes of governing body":true,"Local chapters":false,"Form 990 provided to governing body":true,"Document retention policy":true,"Investment in joint venture":false,"Independent audit financial statements":true,"Consolidated audit financial statements":true,"Accountant compile or review":false,"Financial statements audited by independent accountant":true,"Audit committee":true,"Federal grant audit required":false,"Political activities":false,"Donor advised funds":false,"Conservation easements":false,"Collections of art":false,"School":false,"Hospital":false,"Foreign activities":false,"Foreign office":false,"Gaming":false,"Fundraising activities":false,"Professional fundraising":false,"Loan to officer or DQP":false,"Grant to related person":false,"Business relationship through family member":false,"Business relationship with organization":false,"Transfers to exempt non-charitable organization":false},"Revenues":{"value":78339,"Contributions":{"value":78338,"Other contributions":3043,"Campaigns":7289,"Related organizations":68006},"Program revenue":{"value":0,"Unrelated business revenue":0},"Investment income":{"value":1,"Investment income total":1},"Other revenues":{"value":0}},"Expenses":{"value":9599,"Grant expense":{"value":1198,"Grants to domestic orgs":1198},"Total professional fundraising expense":{"value":0},"Benefits paid to members":{"value":0},"Salaries":{"value":0},"Other expenses":{"value":8401,"Management services":4520,"Accounting":2076,"Other services":5,"Travel":1606,"Insurance":196,"Itemized Expenses":-2}},"Assets":{"value":0,"Non-interest bearing cash":0,"Savings and temp cash investments":0,"Pledges and grants receivable":0,"Accounts receivable":0,"Receivables from officers":0,"Receivables from disqual persons":0,"Other net note and loans":0,"Inventories for sale or use":0,"Prepaid expenses deferred charges":0,"Land, building, equipment":0,"Investments publicly traded":0,"Investments other":0,"Investments program related":0,"Intangible assets":0,"Other assets":0},"Liabilities":{"value":0,"Accounts payable, accrued":0,"Grants payable":0,"Other liabilities":0},"Fund balance":{"value":0},"Form990Details":{"program_service_accomplishments":[{"description":"PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY AIDSC ARE AIMED AT FINDING TREATMENTS AND VACCINES FOR HIV, FINDING NEW ANTIBIOTICS, DISCOVERING NEW TREATMENTS THAT USE THE BODY'S OWN IMMUNE SYSTEM INSTEAD OF ANTIBIOTICS, AND VACCINES FOR A VARIETY OF INFECTIOUS AGENTS.ONE FIELD OF RESEARCH SUPPORTED BY THE CENTER IS HIV.
