Following the launch of the web-based Vital Signs Online last November, Worldwatch is now focused on increasing subscriptions and sales. As of mid-April we had 86 paid subscribers and 36 purchasers of individual trends. We continue to release two VSO trends a month which are announced through Worldwatch's electronic newsletters. Marketing Director Patricia Shyne continues to pursue various marketing strategies and Communications Manager Julia Tier is working to increase press interest and coverage of VSO trends through experiments with various forms of delivery and announcements.\n\nGreen Transport Jobs: Investing in Rail and Transit ManufacturingA mix of factors--economic crisis, climate change, fear of oil import dependence, and the problems associated with high automobile dependence--have prompted growing U.S.. interest in expanding urban transit systems and inter-city rail. Both have long been neglected in a country that has heavily invested in--and massively subsidized--roads and highways. As investments in transit and rail rise, there is considerable hope that building these systems and manufacturing the locomotives and rolling stock will generate much-needed quality employment. The Worldwatch Institute is carrying out research on these critical issues, as part of the Apollo Alliance's U.S.. Transportation Manufacturing Action Plan. Worldwatch senior researchers Michael Renner and Gary Gardner are providing research assistance to T-MAP, working in conjunction with researchers at Northeastern University's Dukakis Center and Duke University's Center on Globalization, Governance, and Competitiveness.
