A few weeks later we hosted the detroit tigers caravan at an event we called field of dreams. At this event four tiger players, paws and other tiger personnel visited the field zone and interacted with members and their friends and families. The rest of the year featured many great programs, events and workshops including: financial literacy, ladies nights, plays, fine arts features, guys nights, poetry and fashion nights, boxing fitness and health fairs, and many leadership workshops and events. The members of the field zone were honored in 2011 for the many community service projects they were involved in for the city of southfield by the mrpa (michigan recreation and park association) with a community service award of excellence. The field zone continues to offer a fun, supervised and safe place for more than 300 members per trimester from the communities of southfield and lathrup village to spend their after-school, evening and weekend hours. Middle school students are bussed from their schools daily and attendance ranged between 75 and 100 students daily throughout the school year. We are extremely pleased with the staff and volunteers who realize that the field zone is more than just a place for members to hang out, that it is a place to mentor them and help them grow in their areas of passion including: music, art, fitness, technology, and leadership.
