In this fiscal year, there were 339 eye donors and 73 donors of other tissues. From these donors, 422 people received sight-restoring cornea transplants; 8 people received human heart valves; 16 bypass operations were possible using donor veins. Donated bone and connective tissues, such as pericardium, fascia and tendons were available for over 5,750 procedures. A return to normal, active lives was a gift to 80 skin recipients.\n\nRe&hpb visited school classrooms and participated in community health fairs, distributing brochures and collecting signed donor cards. We added 2,245 new donors to the registry this year, bringing the total regional registry pledged donors to 102,731. At the end of 2011 in our service area there were 443,247 registrants in the new york state donate life registry administered by the department of motor vehicles and department of health. In addition, healthcare professionals completed re&hpb training and made 3,821 referrals this year for potential eye and tissue donation.\n\nGrants are provided primarily as seed money for investigators to develop ideas or carry out key experiments leading to more extensive support by larger private or governmental agencies. The research topic may involve basic or applied science including theoretical, experimental or clinical techniques.
