Studies prove that teenage girls' self esteem is negatively effected by images girls see in the media. Additionally, teen girls are targeted by advertisers and programmers as a leading consumer group, and are often unknowingly manipulated and exploited by the media. WET's Risk Takers Series is designed to address this problem, teaching girls how to look at the media with a critical eye, break down stereotypes, learn the distinction between an empowering risk and a damaging risk, develop communication skills that enhance each girl's unique voice, identify personal, professional and educational goals, and realize that all of their dreams are possible to achieve. The program uses selected films as a launching pad for discussion, to address pressing issues effecting girls' self esteem today, such as sexuality, safe sex, eating disorders, AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse, peer pressure, race and gender discrimination, suicide and teen pregnancy. Following screenings of selected films, through small group discussions led by women mentors with expertise in social work and psychology, girls learn how to communicate their fears and challenges connected to the issues explored in each film. Additionally, they learn the power in taking an empowering risk and the consequence of taking a damaging risk. Throughout the six month program, the participating girls' self esteem is strengthened, and they are both encouraged and supported to identify and pursue personal, professional and educational goals that lead them to brighter, healthier lives. The inkubator is divided into two divisions - wet films and wet plays. Development support for writers includes private notes and work sessions with wet's artistic director and director of play development, private unrehearsed readings, public readings with celebrated talent and partnership tailored to meet the individual needs of each writer. Partnerships are designed to specifically provide each writer with helpful tools and residencies to support their professional & artistic progress. In fiscal year 2011, marlo hunter joined wet productions as director of script development. Wet's creative director attended readings, met with playwrights, literary agents and regional theatres to discuss partnerships and read scripts. Shirl, a screenplay by laura cahill, was optioned and developed from august 2010 through june 2011. In december 2010 you are here, a play written by zakiyyah alexander, was directed by josh hecht.
