Once a week, for 42 weeks, over 200 students in the first through third grades meet one-on-one with assigned tutors - SRCO's peer tutors from the upper grades - who assisted students to complete their homework, explore onsite learning stations and scavenge the library for new reading adventures.Parent Workshops: The staff interviewed more than 30 students and 20 parents about their wants and needs for an afterschool program. Parents were asked about ways the staff could assist with program planning/implementation - as well as logistical issues such as scheduling and child care. As you may see, three common elements are found in each activity: that is, a high level of attraction; concrete skill-building; and a focus on emerging adulthood. The Bronx DJ Academy A series of workshops teach the theory, history and practice of hip hop and DJing. Skilled instructors help participants to create, perform and participate in DJing. Students are exposed to employment in the music industry, and the specific aspects of handling the responsibilities of a DJ job. Student apprentices do, in fact, work \"gigs\" throughout the Bronx. These life experiences build students' competence, confidence and work ethic. Job Readiness Institute: Assisting students to prepare for the challenges of employment is the central focus of this popular workshop series that runs three days a week for month long sessions. A Job Specialist and two SRCO staff assist 20 students to strengthen their job readiness skills including resume preparation, office protocol, time management, authority and boundaries, communication skills, and perhaps most importantly, interviewing, getting and keeping jobs. The Art of Rhyme Class: High school students participate in workshops in which they receive gold standard instruction in poetry, travel to performance venues throughout the city, and perform their own writings in SRCO shows, slam competitions, and open mic nights throughout the Bronx, and in well-known public venues including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Guest poets and authors share their work and discuss their vocational and personal trajectories.SRCO's Alumni Association: Peer support in the form of advice and wisdom propels this group forward, and keeps graduates coming back. Each year, members pass the torch to a new group providing a band of friendship and trust that binds participants from high school through college. Finally, SRCO offers a college preparation class which guides students through the process of applying to and preparing for college. Activities include: weekly SAT prep classes, workshops on completing applications; choosing the right school; and college fair and campus visits.","expense":394060,"revenue":206481}],"program_service_revenue_detail":[{"business_code":"900099","description":"government The founding board committed itself to revitalize the east bronx community and strengthen families. During srco's first decade, the most immediate and pressing needs inspired grass roots leadership, innovative programs and a full and varied menu of services.","primary_activities":"Achieve provided exemplary child care for working and poor families and fostered the elementary-aged child's healthy development in a safe and nurturing environment. With the support of staffers who continuously encouraged children's learning, children play, complete their homework, and participate in high-level arts, music, and drama and dance lessons. The setting itself is alive with color; children's art work decorates the walls. Every activity is designed to teach something new. Participants routinely read, write, create art and perform. Activities are aligned with the new york state learning standards and therefore bolster and reinforce students' school day learning. Achieve served 250 elementary students from the first through fifth grade in an academic year after school program that runs daily from 2:30 - 6:00 p.m. From january through june. Some of the activities that parents requested were ell classes, job readiness workshops, and computer literacy workshops. Forty parents attended ell classes and job readiness workshops for 40 days or more, and sixty parents attended computer literacy classes for 10 or more sessions.\n\nLeadership, education and development (lead) served more than 100 early adolescents and teens aged 12 - 19 years of age. Students packed our center each day, participating in more than a dozen clubs, activities and workshops. Lead accommodates teen members by providing flexibly scheduled activities including intensive week-long seminars and month-long institutes as well as ongoing workshops. Lead operates for ten months during the school year, and provides a minimum of 180 hours of services for participants annually with at least 100 hours of which will be academic enrichment. Internships will last a minimum of 80 hours annually.older adolescents find srco activities compelling for different reasons. The presence of well-known musicians, authors, poets and djs helps to distinguish srco from other afterschool settings. Concrete supports that help teens to \"handle the future\" are highly valued. Several lead activities are listed below. As you may see, three common elements are found in each activity: that is, a high level of attraction; concrete skill-building; and a focus on emerging adulthood.our comprehensive/multi-faceted educational support and employment program in bronx nda 10 will target 40 high school aged youth. Our program will meet dycd's goals and objectives for youth services by building educational skills, encourage school attendance, assist youth to receive ged diplomas, provide personal and workplace training opportunities, help to develop individual interests and expose youth to career and higher education opportunities. Specifically, our educational support and employment skills training activities will augment rather than replicate school day learning. Our activities will use non-traditional and creative approaches to foster young people's interest in their academic, career, and personal successful futures. We will fulfill these goals and objectives by providing a range of culturally-competent, client-centered activities including instruction embedded in the arts, opportunities for youth led instruction, a variety of approaches to learning such as collaborative group work, project based learning, and technology based initiatives. In addition, srco's youth programs also offer educational and employment activities including homework help, tutoring, college and sat preparation, computer access and instruction, educational counseling, job readiness instruction, internships, and paid employment, along with a parents program which will empower parents to play a role in and advocate for their children's academic success. Our program will take a holistic, strength-based approach and develop skills that empower youth to function successfully in their community and the world at large. Our program will incorporate recognized youth development principles and provide incentives to promote program enrollment, regular attendance, and retention. Incentives will include both non-cash rewards such as trips, gift vouchers, and event tickets, as well as stipends for internships as part of the job-training component. It will prepare youth to meet the challenges of adolescence and to become responsible, successful adults through activities and experiences which help them to become academically, socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively competent and resilient despite exposure to risk factors. Our teen program coordinator and social worker will also provide information, referral, assistance, service coordination, entitlement assistance, and advocacy to address youths' needs and problems regarding housing, finances, violence, and other issues and to connect them and their families with services provided by linked agencies, thus enabling youth to overcome economic, social, and emotional problems that could otherwise interfere with achievement of their educational, and employment goals. A parenting program will encourage family involvement. Programs are committed to a strength-based, positive youth development approach. Youth and partner schools and organizations interact in organizational and program related planning and decisions. The indicators that will be used to verify participants' achievement of each milestone include: 1. Participation survey provided by dycd, and2. Youth will improve grades in a selected area such as english or math by at least 3 points or one letter grade increment. Report cards will be collected as evidence of youths improved educational skills and motivation. Srco will operate for ten months during the school year, and provide a minimum of 180 hours of services for participants annually with at least 100 hours of which will be academic enrichment. Internships will last a minimum of 80 hours annually. The proposed level of service is appropriate because srco's experience in providing teen programs indicate that a minimum of four hours of activities per week matched with high interest incentives will ensure good attendance and motivate participants to achieve personal and program goals. Prescribed activities will achieve each milestone and the selected outcome. Concrete supports that help teens to \"handle the future\" are highly valued. All activities improve literacy skills; expand interest in recreational reading; acquire skills in the performing arts; improve specific developmental tasks including decision-making, judgment, abstract and critical thinking; strengthen communication skills; increase positive social behaviors; strengthen self-concept, sense of efficacy and resilience; and prepare youth for college and/or employment training. A sample of srco's non-traditional activities which supplement homework assistance and tutoring are listed below. Three common elements are found in each activity: a high level of attraction; concrete educational and life skill-building; and a strength based approach rooted in high interest arts areas. The bronx dj academy exemplifies srco's capacity to combine elements of teen chic with learning standards, social support and academic rigor. A series of workshops teach the theory, history and practice of hip hop and djing. Skilled instructors, help participants to create, perform and participate in djing. State-of-the-art equipment magnifies the experience. Students practice communication and language skills as they critically analyze music. Students are exposed to employment in the music industry, and the specific aspects of handling the responsibilities of a dj job. Student apprentices do, in fact, work \"gigs\" throughout the bronx. These life-experiences build students' competence, confidence and work ethic. Job readiness institute assists students to prepare for the challenges of employment is the central focus of this popular workshop series that runs three days a week for month long sessions. A job specialist and two srco staff assist 20 students per session to strengthen their job readiness skills including resume preparation, office protocol, time management, authority and boundaries, communication skills, and perhaps most importantly, interviewing, getting and keeping jobs. College preparation guides students through the process of applying to and preparing for college. Activities include: weekly sat prep classes, workshops on completing applications; choosing the right school; and college fair and campus visits. The art of rhyme class attracts high school students who are interested in writing and performing poetry. This is accomplished through home visits, phone calls, individual and small group counseling, and special events as incentives. This intergenerational initiative matches senior citizen and high school teen, one-on-one, and they share life experiences. Those experiences are then recorded and written as an anthology after 8-90 minute sessions. Throughout the year, other intergenerational events take place with seniors and srco's client population. The seniors come from parkchester's senior center.parent and young children, ages 6 months to 3 years, meet and play together in structured activities 5 days per week. Singing, dancing, organized games and children's social activities are held with each session. Additionally, there is a period where parents read to their child each session.the healthy families program provides individual and family support services through referral-based case management. One case manager (catholic charities) provides assistance to a minimum of 100 clients and their families. The actual number served last fiscal year was 156.
