modern dance classes for 50 students living in the flatbush community. since then it has grown into an educational institution serving over 2,000 students annually through six integrated in-school, after-school, and weekend programs in academic and literacy training, artistic training, personal skills development, community engagement, cultural heritage classes, and socially responsible art making. the organization's name comes from the west african yoruba word \"ifetayo\" which means \"love is enough for joy\" and captures ifetayo's nurturing approach to empowering youth and redefining community development.Established in 1989,ifetayo has served over 20,000 students and families in central brooklyn to become an accomplished youth enrichment organization receiving significant recognition for its work. in 2001, ifetayo received the prestigious union square award, in 2002 founder/president kwayera archer-cunningham received the black rose award and in 2004 she received a brooklyn arts exchange baxten award for her contribution as a brooklyn educator. in 2008 ifetayo won the new york times company nonprofit excellence award for excellently culturally based management, and in 2009 the organization was selected by the ford foundation for free staff training through its capacity building: next generation arts spaces program administered by the kennedy center.Kwayera archer-cunningham was also recently selected as a recipient of the new york state association of black and puerto rican legislators, inc. community service award,which was presented to her on february empowering youth and redefining community development.Established in 1989,ifetayo has served over 20,000 students and families in central brooklyn to become an accomplished youth enrichment organization receiving significant recognition for its work. in 2001, ifetayo received the prestigious union square award, in 2002 founder/president kwayera archer-cunningham received the black rose award and in 2004 she received a brooklyn arts exchange baxten award for her contribution as a brooklyn educator. in 2008 ifetayo won the new york times company nonprofit excellence award for excellently culturally based management, and in 2009 the organization was selected by the ford foundation for free staff training through its capacity building: next generation arts spaces program administered by the kennedy center.Kwayera archer-cunningham was also recently selected as a recipient of the new york state association of black and puerto rican legislators, inc. community service award,which was presented to her on february 14, 2010. additionally, in 2012 ifetayo was named a finalist and in 2013 an awardee, for the national arts and humanities youth program
